Default Engine mods for my LS2 Rx7. Cam etc.

I know this is a corvette forum but I'm posting this here because I have an engine out of a 07 vette that i'm putting into my rx7.

Just want some opinions because I havent been around long enough to know what's good and what vendors are blowing smoke. I'm thinking about the G5X3 cam kit from LG. Is there a cam that is 'almost' as good that doesn't require changing pushrods, springs, retainers etc?

Also on top of that I want to add a 100 shot. I guess i'm not informed about this setup either. Every other car i've had was a blown v8. Nitrous/NA is new for me. I already have longtubes and I have to custom make my intake. I'm not sure if I have room to add a FAST because it will hit my firewall.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I had an RX-7 and it was a fun light car. I wouldnt think you could fit the engine and running gear in that car. You know, steering rack, transmission. I had my engine out and it is amazing how small it is when you take the intake manifold and accessories off of it.

Sorry but no help on your questions.

LS1tech.com is your friend... you'll get far more technical engine info than you will here. Most of the stuff here is debates on waxes, floormats, and colored underhood do-dads

Hey, I just sold my '94 LS1 Rx7 last fall. It was a new crate engine so no aftermarket cam was ever installed. Decided to go with an 08 Coupe and mod the ls3 a little. A cam install will be in my future for the vette but I am not sure what I would go with yet. But lots of information on here and do a search on youtube for "c6 cam" Lots of videos on there as well. Lots of vendor info. on here too, lingenfelter.com, tbyrne.com, ls1speed.com, and thunderracing.com to name a few.

FYI I have a G5-X2 cam in my '01Z... it made 436 rwhp and 397 rwtq which is great for the cam. I have a CAI and kooks headers. Also, have yella terra ultralight roller rockers.

Here's a video... it's a smidge smaller than the X3.

There's quite a few of them running around. I've even seen pics of an FD with an LS7.

Cam kits require you to change the rods/springs etc. as a precaution... how many miles are on the LS2 you put in the RX7? I would recommend hardened rods and fresh springs, especially for a high-lift cam like the G5X3. Just put one in my LS2 and did the rods/springs etc. at LGM. Last thing you want to do is cheap out on the rods or springs and then find yourself 5000 miles down the road with a dropped valve... there goes the LS2!

Yeah, I assume you changed the rods/valve springs?

I just posted here because I wanted more LS2 specific responses. Regardless of what car it's in the mods will be the same.

Anyone recommend any other bigger sized cams other than LG?

It's a 93. I originally was using the money ~30k as a downpayment on a c6z06. However, I ultimately chose the rx7 ls2 route mainly because I wouldnt have a car payment and I just like to build cars. I feel if I got the z06 I would have just put LT's maybe a cam and be done with it. I'm building this car from the ground up.

Anyway nice cars guys, I almost bought one.

Any cam worth putting in will require new springs and pushrods. The stock parts can't take much more than the stock cam and you'd be wasting your time putting in such a small cam. Patriot Gold Extreme springs are a great deal, <$300 including vitron seals, TI retainers and Super 7 locks. Pushrods are cheap at $100 or so. You might want to put in thinner head gaskets while you are at it to increase compression to about 11.4, it'll help the low end, unless you are just going to drag race the car then it won't matter so much (and your car will be super light).

There's likely better Nitrous cams than the X3...give LG a call and tell them what you are doing and they will give you good advice and sell you a good cam for your application. I also suspect they'll tell you if you stick to a 100 shot your bottom end will be fine.

I suspect you'll be modding your firewall...a FAST is not that much bigger than a factory intake and you can mod it for <$40 to fit without cutting a VEtte firewall (see Spinmonster's post on the topic with pics). A FAST is a great mod if you can swing the $700+ price.

Good luck I wish I had the place (and knowledge) to do such a swap. There's a Miata with a SBC that races with us that I think is quite cool. I love these swaps.

Thanks guys, here's some pics so far.

Wider fenders; I gotta mold them in yet.

This is the body kit I have, what it will look like when i'm done with the LS2; I estimate the car will weigh about 2900 lbs.

Great project!!! Keep the pics coming, I love these kind of build threads.

Cobra4b, not all of us C6 guys spend our time waxing! Here's a vid of my G5x3. Great write up on your targa conversion by the way!!

czwalga00gt Be sure and get an underdrive pulley for the crank - about $200 and 10 rwhp...not a bad deal... and you have to remove the stock one anyway for the cam swap.

Joe, that car sounds great with the cutouts open. When i get this thing running it's going to be with open LT headers, because i'm going to have to custom make the rest of the exhaust, I cant imagine what it's going to sound like until I get the exhaust completed. Either way it will sound great for a few days; after a while it would get annoying.

Just curious why you have to take the crank pulley off when changing the clutch. I've changed my fair share of clutches and have never had to do such a thing. That said sounds like a good gain for just $200.

Thanks!! Yes you will get sick of open headers pretty quickly...I like my cutouts open at the track but it gets old fast driving around town!

Had a little typo there - I'm posting in a clutch thread and a cam thread at the same time...duh :o . I meant to say when you do your cam swap you take off the balancer. I fixed it above.

Your project looks great. Please keep us posted!

You will probably need a little help with that build...

www.HinsonSuperCars.com has done hundreds of LSx into 2nd and 3rd Gen RX7's. They can SIMPLIFY your life big time as far as having that engine bolt right in with their pre-fabbed supension and engine cradle.

Their prices are VERY reasonable and their turn-around times are fast!

Also, they can tell you EXACT weights, cam recommendations, etc... I can't say enough great things about those guys!
