I have an '08 A6 coupe with the dual exhaust and 2.71 rear end. It came with the standard GY F1 runflats and now has 3500 miles. Just this weekend I noticed on the outer tread of both rear tires (right much worse than driver's side) chunks missing (1 inch wide, 1/2 inch long) behind evey other tread groove. I admit I hop on it often and hard from a stand still and slow speeds. I expected tire wear by a smooth reduction of the tread but not by chunks being taken out. I run it on older rural roads. Is this a tire defect or just par for the course from hard driving?
Second problem. Just this weekend also, when I floor it from a standstill or very low speed (in automatic drive) when the tach reaches around 6500 rpm sometimes it will make a noise and delay the shift for an instant. The noise almost sounds like the rev limiter in manual mode when you go too high but it is just one "pop" and then it shifts. It seems to happen the first 2 runs then it's ok after that. Bad gas? Water? I always fill up on premium. I hope it's not an engine problem. Comments will be appreciated.

Mine had chunks missing on my original runflats. But I also drifted the car sideways a lot and did a few burnouts. I thought it was because of that.
If you aren't doing that. Maybe you're driving the car too aggressively when the tires haven't warmed up. Take sharp turns after you've gone about a good 5 miles or so after start up.
I took it to the dealership this afternoon and the Vette tech said the back wheels looked toed in because of the wear pattern so JohnoDrake you were right on that. He aligned all 4 wheels and gave me new rear tires for free. I thought I might get hasseled but I was pleasantly surprised. I asked if they had seen this before or was I just the lucky one but they said it was a first, but who knows. I will mend my driving habits at least on these old roads.
He said the engine problem might be from water in the gas. Put a can of iso-propyl alcohol in it and it seems to have worked.
