Default Engine oil question

Need to do an oil change soon and trying to select an appropriate engine oil. Although I can get Mobil 1 5w/30 over here (UK), it's very expensive @ $100 for 6 US quarts. I can get Fuchs Titan Supersyn EcoFlex 5w/30 for $70 for 12 US quarts. This oil does NOT meet GM 4718M, but it DOES meet GM-LL-A-025. Other specs are ACEA A3/B3/B4 and API SL/CF. Am I going to be torturing my LS2 by filling with this stuff, or will it be fine? I don't drag the car... it's a daily driver and it's driven fairly sedately most of the time.

Cheers,
Ian.

The oil will most likely be fine.

However, just be wary of any potential warranty coverage issues if you have an engine problem and the dealer notices that the oil used was not GM4718M compliant.

What about Castrol Syntec, or Pennzoil Platinum? Are these any cheaper at Halford's, or another chain? The Castril Syntec website states that it is 4718M certified across several grades. The PP may not even be available across the pond, so scratch that suggestion.

Here are some suggestions from www.halfords.com

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...tegoryrn_77306

This is their own 5w40 fully synthetic oil for 33 pounds per 5 liters and meets Mercedes 229.3, VW502.00/505.00, Porsche, and BMW Longlife specifications. It is API SL CF ACEA A3 B3 B4 oil. It is more than your suggestion, but should be a great oil for your car, and quite a bit cheaper that the Mobil1. Holy smokes, is that oil expensive over there!

Second choice:

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...tegoryrn_77303

This is Castrol Edge 0w30, 44 pounds per 4 liters, and meets ACEA A3/B3/B4 API CF API SM and
MB 229.3, 229.5
GM-LL-A-025
GM-LL-B-025
VW 502 00/503 01/505 00
BMW LL01

Last suggestion, perhaps the best out of these is: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...tegoryrn_77310

Perhaps one of these might work better for your car.

Please let us know what you eventually decide to do. Good Luck.

Thanks, but I'd rather stick with the factory-recommended 5w/30 viscosity range. Also, the Castrol Edge, apart from being a 0-weight oil when cold, is also even MORE expensive than Mobil 1!

Cheers,
Ian.

I agree with you on that mate, but truly, given the prices for all flavours, synthetic oil in the UK must be sourced from the left breasts of 7 foot tall nordic virgins fed by only manna from heaven or something!

Is that $100 US or 100 pounds? Either way that is insanely expensive. I just purchased 6qrts Mobil 1 for $25.

I wouldn't worry too much about your oil chooses you mentioned as long as they are quality synthetics. I put Mobil 1 in my BMW which doesnt meet their standards but I think if its good enough for my Vette it should be good enough for my 2.5 6cyl BMW.
