Default oil check question.

This is dumb, but how are you supposed to read the oil dipstick? The reason I ask is because, I've checked mine and on one side of the stick the oil just covers about 1/2 inch of the tip, well BELOW the hash marks, and the rest of that side is BONE DRY. On the other side of the stick, the oil is smeared along the edge of the stick up to about an inch ABOVE the hash marks. I've tried running the car then checking right after, letting it sit for 5 mins after shutoff, checking after its been sitting for a day etc. No matter how I check it I always get the same results. I do wipe the dipstick down after every time, so I dont know why it's doing that. So am I in need of oil or am I overfilled?

Sounds like you might be a little low; usually you read the lower side because oil can get smeared onto the stick while removing it from the holder.

But probably the best indicator is the holes. The oil level is at least as high as the lowest hole that has oil in it, and not as high as the lowest hole that doesn't. Not as precise as the marks, but easier to read.
