Default Airbag Seat Sensor Q?

Just checking for similar experiences --

Once in a while (today several times) the instrument panel airbag warning light illuminates. The light's coming on is clearly related to my sitting in the seat (yeah, I'm undertall for my weight, but not enough to make the seat send an "oh my!" warning through the dash! ).

When I lift my tail out of the seat, the light goes off; sit back down, and it's on again.

No obvious loose connectors under the seat. She'll be going into the dealer to get checked out, but in the meantime I thought I'd tap the Collective's knowledge to see if anyone's experienced this one before.

I guess you're talking about the driver's seat airbag - is that right?

If it is the driver's seat, I don't know what's going on!?!?

The passenger's seat has a sensor in it (part# 31 in the picture in the link below):

http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...layCatalogid=0

The passenger airbag is designed to turn on or off depending on whether there's a passenger in it, but it doesn't do anything to that little red airbag light on the instrument panel - it activates the yellow "passenger airbag" light (different places on different year models).

So.....I'm waiting to hear what the dealer tells you, because there's definitely a problem with something in the wiring or plugs in your seat.

Default pyrotechnic seat belt retractor?

My air bag light stays on while driving with the seat belt latched. The dealer read the codes and the problem is in the seat belt tensioner. The dealer is holding my car as the part is only available from the manufacturer and it must be shipped ground because of it's Hazmat status.

I've looked on the C6 forum and can't locate any information. (it's probably somewhere!)

Does the C6 have pyrotechnic seat belt retractor?

Thanks for the thought! I'll look into it. As to the belt tensioner, when I get back to the house I'll look it up in the service manual.

Yes - the seat belts have a "pre-tensioner" device that is fired when the restraint system sensors detect a crash impact. They cinch down the seat belt about 1-1/2 or 2 inches.

Here's a picture:

The tube on the bottom contains a charge that fires to cinch down the set belt. The unit on the left is good, the one on the right has been activated and you can see the cable has pulled the seat belt receptacle down a couple inches and the corrugated plastic over the cable has been squished down.

I put a set of full power seats out of a regular C6 into my C6 Z06 to get full power on both sides with adjustable lumbar support and side bolster adjustments. When I got the C6 seats I was told they came out of an accident car but the airbags had not activated. The seats have side airbags in them and they were still good.

I put my Z06 skins on the seats and put the driver's side in and had an airbag light. I wanted to track down the problem before I put the passenger seat in while I pretty sure it was isolated to the driver's side.

I drove it around for a week or so with the airbag light on. I checked the wire harness connections on the seat several times but couldn't get the light to go out. I noticed that the seat belt receptacle was shorter than the one on my Z06 seat. I finally pulled the seat out and noticed the crushed plastic. There was also a hole on the unit and I compared it to the unit on my Z06 seat - one had a free hole, and one had a gear shaped protrusion filling up the hole. I finally decided that the pre-tensioners on the C6 seats had fired, so I took the ones off my Z06 seats. As soon as I put the driver's seat back in and started up the car - NO AIRBAG LIGHT!

So....apparently the pre-tensioners had fired in the accident. If they have fired the circuit for the restraint system shows a fault and will illuminate the airbag light.

Good luck with the problem. Hopefully your car is under warranty. The units cost around $200 each ($110 each from forum vendor Gene Culley).

Bob,

Many thanks for the detailed reply. Yes, the car is under a 7 year GM extended warranty.
