Can anyone give some detail on removing the console. I am installing an ipod interface that requires me to access the rear of the radio.
I have an A6 with F55. My main questions concern what I need to do in the shifter and parking brake areas, as well as the ride control ****.
Any help is gratefully appreciated.
I have not done an A6 car so I don't know how to remove the shift lever. You will need to remove the leaver to get the boot up over the mount. There is probably enough wire so that you don't have to disconnect the F55 control or the TC switch. I was able to move the console out of the way with only disconnecting the driver side heater switch when I installed my shifter and there was enough space to have removed the radio as I recall. Removing all the connections isn't that hard though. 2 Heater switches, lighter plug and hazard plug plus the TC and F55 are all that you have. Then the spade plugs just pull out. Sounds like the end of the world but it is really no drama. Check to ensure that the metal clips come out with the console- they sometimes come off of the plastic part. If they do, just pull them out with a pair of pliers and put them back on the plastic spade.
There are several threads on how to. Komorman has a good one.
I have '05 MN6. First remove the center glove box cover. Then pop the tombstone off, unplug the airbag light, and you'll find a couple 1/4 inch screws on the back side inside the center glove box. I noticed mine has the plug for the F55 but my car is a Z51. You should be able to unplug the switch. Pry up the emergency brake boot and you'll find two more 1/4 inch screws on the right side. Remove the shift ****. You should now be able to pull the console straight back. It basically pops out. If you have seat heaters unplug them from the console. Unplug the emergency flasher between the upper vents. You don't have to unplug the cigarette lighter because the wires are long enough to pull the console out far enough to get to the radio. You'll need to remove the screws holding the hvac controls first and then the radio screws. The radio pulls straight back. Mine has nav so the radio is pretty big and bulky.
When you reinstall the console just line up the clips and smack it with the your palm and it should snap back in.
It's not too difficult. I've had mine out several times for shifter and console change.
