Default K&N filter problem

I was informed recently about a possible problem with the K&N filter systems. It seems that the oil used on the filter can get into & cause problems in the induction system. Has anyone heard about this possible problem.

K&N says there is no problem.....

If way too much oil is used when re-oiling the filter after cleaning it can get on the itty-bitty wires in the MAF and cause them to read incorrectly, causing a code. They are a real pain to clean, too.

Not a problem as long as the proper amount of oil is used (it doesn't take much).

a lot of people seem to think you need to get the filter dripping wet with oil = yes you will have a problem.

Yes. Too much oil and not waiting long enough for the oil to soak in are known issues. Some forum members even reported too much oil on filters from the factory.

All washable oil filters will cause a problem if too much oil is used.

Yup.....I've built and sold over 1000 K&N based Airbox systems for Audi's and VW's which also use a MAF based metering system. Never an issue until an owner gets a little exuberant with re-oiling at the first cleaning..

As a matter of fact, straight out of the box, a brand new K&N filter LOOKS like it's over-oiled in my opinion. It MAY NOT be, but it sure looks close to "dripping" to me.

Simple solution is to let it sit out a bit in a non-dusty, direct sun on some newspapers. I do that (or used to when I had them) as a part of my shaking out/washing/drying/re-oiling/drying process for these filters. Worked great; never had a problem with about a dozen or so of them over 20 years. Mine looked dryyyyyyy.....
