No, you cannot check the codes on the C6 like you did on the C5. You'll have to buy a reader, but someone else here will have to give you detailed info. about which reader you need.
I think I've seen posts where some got autozone to read the codes for them, but I'm not sure.
I read somewhere that if you push and hold "options", then hit fuel 4 times you can see the codes but I don't know if that was C5 or C6. I think the C6 has the new OBDII Candi interface so a lot of scanners won't work with the C6.

The DIC key sequence that you mentioned (options, fuel 4 times) was for the C5. That feature was disabled on the C6. The only option on the C6 is to use a CANBUS capable OBDII code reader.
Run your car for 100 miles or so, along with approx 20 start cycles. Then, disconnect the battery for a minute or two. This might solve your problem. Good luck.
Everytime you do a mod on your car you ALWAYS disconnect
the negative side of the battery! This clears the computer
and avoids the codes. Otherwize the computer gets conflicting
info and you get your CELs
