Default MGW Shifter Question -- 2008 C6

I'm new to the boards and new to the Corvette family. I just bought a 2008 C6 about 8 weeks ago. I want to upgrade the stock shifter and based on all my research I feel that the MGW is the way to go.

I've read that the 2008 stock throw is shorter than the 2007. Does the MGW offer a shorter throw than the stock 2008? Any feedback would be GREATLY appreciated.

The MGW offers a much shorter throw than the 08 shifter. But even better it gives you much more positive throws between 2nd & 3rd as well as all other gears. This is the shifter that GM should offer as stock, or at least one of the boxes you could check as an option. It is the best mod for the $, other than a Vararam, you can add to a Vette IMO.

Read the "MGW Finally Online" thread towards the end. The shifter in the 08 isn't shorter, the internals are tighter. So, adding a shorter thrwo shifter will decrease required shifter travel by the same proportion, making an 08 w/ MGW shorter than an earlier model w/ MGW.

Thanks Matthew. I looked through that post earlier, but the info must have been hiding. That's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the heads-up!

I have a question and need to hijack the thread. I've been interested in the MGW since I bought my 07 Z51 last October.

But I'm wondering if this mod is right for me. With my driving style, I might not actually like a short throw shifter if "finding" the right gear becomes more difficult. Let me explain:

I live in a small town and like to cruise around at night. I like to get on it in 1st and 2nd, then depending on my mood go into 3rd, 4th, or 5th. Or downshift from 5th right into 3rd.

So with the MGW and the tighter pattern, is it more difficult to "find" the gear you want if you're not running through them sequentially?

I don't track my car. I just like embarrassing Nissan Z's and kids who think their Mustang's are fast off the line. Rarely do I ever accelerate hard past 60 MPH. By then I've proved my point to that kid in the Mustang, know what I mean?

From what I read (I don't have one YET), the shifter has a stronger pull towards the center, so it would actually make it easier to find 3rd and 4th gear. This means that it takes more force (still not much) to get to the outside gears (1,2,5,6), but those are the easy gears anyway. So I would say the MGW is perfect for someone that wants to quickly shift through the gears from 1st to 4th.

I do have an MGW in my 08 and it is a great shifter. But, you have to get used to it. I was having problems at first missing shifts and going into the wrong gear. It was all me though as i was trying to force the shifts just like I had to do with the stock shifter.

George, from MGW, gave me a few tips. On the 2nd to 3rd shift, use an open palm and let the shifter do the work. The internal springs of the shifter will force it over to the correct position when going from 2nd to 3rd. For 3rd to 4th, just pull back.

From the top! In neutral, pressure to the left and forward and into 1st. Slight pressure to the left and pull back for 2nd. Use open palm and just push forward and there is 3rd. Pull straight back and there is 4th. Use open palm and slight pressure to the the right and there is 5th. Slight pressure to the right and pull striaght back and there is 6th.

When in 5th, if you apply no pressure to the right and just pull straight back, there is 4th. Pull striaght back with no pressure when in 5th and then just push forward with no pressure and there is 3rd.

Once you get the hang of it and get in your head what the shifter is doing, it is pretty darn slick. Now yesterday I got a bit lazy going from 5th to 6th and found myself back in 4th a couple of times with the revs up around 5 grand. That will get your attention! Once it all becomes second nature, you will love it.

Well said. The MGW acts just like the OEM shifter, just more precise and, of course, shorter throws.

(Up around 5 grand in 5th - you were humpin' at about 160! )

No, no, no, not 160. I was running about 75 and went to shift into 6th and hit 4th instead, then the revs shot up! Now not to lie, I have seen 160 just once!

I was also on the fence with my 08 Z51 MZ6. I fianlly decided that it was worth giving it a try, I could alway sell it. I've had for 3 months, 3000 miles, and a Hooked On Driving road course day now. IT IS STAYING!!!!! The shifts are crisp and positive. I really enjoy going through the gears with the MGW.

Man I've been itching to get one as I loved the short throw shifter in my C5. My shoulder is going out though and it hurts shifting with the stock shifter at times . Gonna need to get the shoulder fixed so I can get that shifter in the car. If I go under the knife the wife will drive the vette and I already know she HATES the short throw shifters (from the C5) so I can't chance it and do it earlier rather than later. Driving the Jeep with a bum should is going to SUCK!!!!

Although I broke my right wrist once upon a time and I learned to shift with my left hand (no jokes here....). Hmmmmmm????
