Default Differential question

how much would it cost to purchase a core for a stage 2 rebuild if the housing is cracked/unuseable? What core is recommended for an 05 c6

Unfortunately, the only differential that is a direct bolt in for the 2005 is a 2005 differential. However, if you wish to use a later model, the rear tranny case can also be swapped to a later design, allowing later design differentials to bolt up. I have spoken with DTE and asked if a 2005 specific differential case brace could be designed to eliminate the case flex that is the root of the differential failures. They said no, however they are working on a billet case that with the correct internals, would be near bulletproof. Bad thing is that it will not be avilable for a long time, probably next year at the earliest.

so is it the 05 differential core that is weak? wouldn't it defeat the purpose to use another 05 core if you break it?

As the pinion gear pushes against the ring gear, in addition to attempting to turn the ring gear, it also pushes it away. When the case is not strong enough to counteract this force, it flexes. Enough or severe flexing, and the case fails, usually with a big bang. I've never understood why GM installs an additional 50 horsepower in the C6, then engineers a differential that cannot perform under the additional stress and is weaker that the previous C5 unit? I'm convinenced that this is where torque management originated. A software attempt to keep their cheap cases from grenading under hard use. Why else would they improve the cases in subsequent years, evidentually installing Z06 differentials in all C6's beginning in 07? GM should recall all 2005 C6's and retrofit them with the improved cases. Almost every 2005 car owner I know is afraid to launch hard for fear of a case failure.

What you want for your 05 C6 is the 03-04 Z06 rear direct bolt in
and 10 times stronger

This post by DTE and BLOWNBLUEZO6 may be of some help.

Like so many others before you, you were given grossly inaccurate and incorrect information regarding what application our differential strut is used for and why... I will set the record strright for you by providing you with 100% accurate information from the designing engineer who created the successful track-proven product 5 years ago- me.

DTE:
It does not matter if your car is equipped with a 1-rib differential case, a 3-rib differential case or a million-rib differential case for the likelihood of transmission/differential case fracture to occur in that area due to metallurgical fatigue, deflection stress or excessive shock load events.

In all of these instances, there is still only 5 meager fasteners between the transmission-to-differential juncture where the greatest probability of fracture/breakage will occur. You can have any amount of differential case webbing count you want under the car, but the weak mounting point at the transmission extension housing still remains and is at risk, due to the light duty cast aluminum parts in that area.

In other words...a 1-rib case will fracture just as easily as a 3-rib unit would without the use of our product, because the small connection point at the transmission still has not changed and it's still weak- even though the differential case may be stronger by itself.

Our product protect both areas from fracture, regardless of differential case design and it's proven itself successful time-and-time again in numerous high powered drag cars over the years with varying powertrain combinations. Do a search and you'll find most successful high powered cars are using it to this very day with success as well- including our newest success of our driveline products being in Paul Smith's 427ci. powered C5 Corvette that just won Pinks All Out in Atlanta, cutting 1.3's 60 ft. times all day long with the wheels in the air!

It matters not to me whether you use one or not- it's your car and your wallet, but at least you can make an educated decision on which way you need to go when you're equipped with *ACCURATE** information to make the decison with. Good luck!

Regards,
Phil

YOu need to contact RPM. When i blew the diff into pieces on my 2005 I contacted them. At the time they had a prototype bracket that would bolt the 2006+ differential up. This was about 6 months ago. Give them a call, it might be in production.
