Default LS2 vs. LS3 Intake

I was looking at the difference in the stock air intake of an LS2 and my LS3 Corvette tonight. The LS3 has a 2" pipe that tees off to an box that is about 9"x9" that is on the passenger side of the intake. It comes off just before the intake connects to the throttle body. This feature is not on a stock LS2 engine. Can somebody tell me what this is for?

It's an air/noise silencer of some sort if I'm not mistaken.

Its a helmholtz resonator. Used to dampen sound waves, and in this case reduces induction noise.

When designed correctly they can also improve air-flow (I don't know how the one used on the LS3 affects air-flow).

I thought that siliencers were always a restriction and should be removed from the system. Is that not the case with Vettes or an LS3???
