Default Finally clunkless!!!!!

All,

Don't ya just hate these ads? ..>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Some of you may have seen my post http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1985084 regarding a fairly nasty/annoying clunking/bumping sound that sounded as if it was coming from the right rear of the car.

Being the ****/do-it-yourselfer engineer that I am I figured I'd try the easy stuff. This weekend I gave up and took it into the dealer this morning with 1-1/2 pages of the things I did try (which gave them a good start ) and what I didn't or couldn't try. I think they were a little shocked when I pulled out the list. I told them I had my C5 torn down to pieces several times so it was easy for me to go through a simple "drill"....although that process of rolling around under the car was a little aggravating since its brand new.

Anyhow, out of all things it WAS a front anti-sway bar end link (actually they replaced both links and bushings to be safe). During my checking I determined that the front left was clicking (by rocking the car a little with the driver's door) but I absolutely did not believe that could be making the horrible noise that sounded like it was coming from the rear. I disconnected it to make sure the clicking went away but didn't friggin drive it otherwise I would of solved the problem. This was like the last thing I ran into this weekend. Go figure. I saw several posts where people mentioned mind-game acoustics in the car. I'm a firm believer now!!!!!

The shop foreman did the work so that gave me quite a bit of comfort as I have (a little less now) dealership-phobia. I didn't buy the car from these guys so this was the first time to that dealership and they were great.

Now, answer me this. An end link that shoots craps after 6K miles?

Anyhow, glad to have my baby back. Time for a good stiff drink.

I've had the same issue as you have -- a noise that sounded like the right rear swaybar link. In fact, I was convinced that was the problem, so I replaced that link without even disabling the bar for a test. (Yes, the car's under warranty, but I'm impatient and thought I had the problem "nailed".) I was both surprised and disappointed when the noise was still there.

After reading your post, I rocked the car back and forth, and much to my surprise, it seemed that the noise was coming from the left front. Given your findings, this seemed like a huge coincidence, but I took the link I had removed from the right rear and installed it at the left front. Unfortunately, the noise (still sounding as if it sourced at the right rear while driving the car) was still there.

Now, time to do this right. I disabled the rear swaybar, went for a ride, no noise. I re-secured the rear swaybar, installing the link I had removed from the left front on the left rear, went for a ride, and FINALLY, the noise was gone. On my car, it was the left rear link causing the noise, even though the sound seemed to emanate from the right rear.

Impatience caused me to make a career out of fixing this problem, but at least it's fixed.

Ernie
