Default Warning: 2008 Pass Airbag Malfunction

Fellow Corvetters,
1. June 28, 2008 Pass airbag warning light on dash comes on and rear view mirror indicates pass airbag is not on, despite a pass present and belted in.
2. July 9, pass belt tensioner is diagnosed as faulty and replaced by my local CO dealer.
3. July 17, while on a 2K mile trip to AZ, warning light comes on again.
4. July 18, Scottsdale AZ dealer replaces airbag module (side impact inflator).
5. July 18 (hours later) light reappears, AZ dealer now guesses it's driver's side but doesn't have part in stock.
6. July 21, back in CO, local dealer (original missdiagnoser) orders pass side seat cushion sensor.
7. August 8, THREE WEEKS later, "part is still not in." Red warning light still on.
Are these Gomers lying to me, is it possible that GM takes longer than 3 wks to ship a part?
What do I do with a $60K car that can't carry a passenger because the airbag is inoperable?
What are my options? Contact GM/Chevrolet about this nightmare? Go to yet another (3rd) dealer? Disconnect the seat cushion sensor to disable the light?
I love the car but not being able to drive it is frustrating as h**l. What are my REAL options to get my car correctly fixed? It seems that these dealers are just charging GM for their time and needless/wrong parts. With GM stock shares at 1954 levels ($10/share), they can ill afford this sort of waste, further customer dissatisfacion, or bad p.r. or any sort.
Any and all ideas would be welcomed. I also would very much like to hear from others having similar problems that dealers do not know how to address.
Thanks to all,
Ric

The first thing you need to do is register with the National Highway Safety Administration at this link.

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/

This is a common problem with the C6 that GM has a real problem solving. It has been reported on the forum many times. Dealers through parts at the issue with some luck. My 2005 is out of warranty and check air bag light has started coming on. I want to know if safety issues are covered past the warranty period. Mine does not stay on long enough to take it to the dealer as I want them to see the light so they won't think I'm crazy.

Call GM and tell them your story.

Good luck.

Ditto, this is a real safety issue.

I'd be looking up lemon laws if I was you. This shouldnt be that hard to fix. Plug computer in and see what part is reading out of spec.

It's not always that simple. Many times there are no code's set.

NHTSA will not fix the problem. I am not sure if there is a part supply issue or if the dealer(s) are just guessing and mis-diagnosing the root cause of the problem. Could be a wiring harness issue?

If the dealer is not getting the job done, call Chevrolet Customer Assistance. Maybe they will get a regional service engineer out to help with this issue.

Surprisingly, the GM guys are very proactive about fixing my brake issue. Give them a call and report it to NHTSB, do everything you can.

Default Warning Airbag Malfunction

August 14. Service mgr from local CO dealer phones to say part is in--almost a 4 wk wait. According to him I'd better plan on leaving car since it's likely to take 2 to 3 hrs to replace pass seat cushion module/sensor. Going in Mon Aug 18th at 8 am. Stay tuned.
After I get the car back, I plan to contact GM as well as HSAT.
thanks for all of the responses.
