I used to have 2005 coupe, and never had any problems with my top making any noises. I went ahead and got a brand new 2008, and after about 4000 miles it started making a horrible creaking noise when going over bumps, curbs etc. Of course the dealer says there is nothing that can be done, but I thought I would check with you guys to see if there was anything anyone has heard before that can help quiet this top down.
My 05 does the same thing. I am just about to install a new tunnel plate (more for handling reasons) and that is one of the thing it is supposed to cure. I will let you know how it goes when done.
After a few hundred miles on my 08 the top began to snap crackle and pop more than the cereal. I noticed the problem was amplified after the car sat at times in the hot sunlight.
I read about applying heat-shrink tubing on the metal posts and the use of C-clips. I didn't need the C-clips because my top had the latest factory fix that has the rollers already frozen in place. This told me that in my particular case the creaking and popping noise was not coming from the rollers, so I went ahead with the shrink-tubing mod. I'd also remembered that one should be very careful as to the type of lubricant used on rubber, especially O-rings (many types of lubricant will actually cause rubber O-rings and gaskets to fail prematurely). I'd once learned that fact the hard way with a pool filter. I decided to use the same product I now use on my Pool equipment, which holds its own in varying harsh conditions: Leslie's Pool & Spa Lube. It is a clear gel recommended for O-rings, gaskets, valves and threaded parts. It also seals and protects against chemical attacks, such as chlorine.
I applied the lube on the O-rings and rubber gaskets and the top is now completely quiet. I parked the car in the hot sun all day yesterday, and the top remained quiet. Hopefully this solution will help out other forum members as well.
