Driving around L.A. today{about a 100 deg. outside} and the tranny temp got to around 234.
Good,bad,or normal?

That's a little high for my tastes but it's not uncommon for such a modified car to see those temps in that kind of weather, especially when driving it in a more spirited fashion.
Forced induction cars tend to run hotter and cause the trans to work harder in general and intercoolers often block the radiator/transmission cooler as well.
I would look into a larger (and/or better placed) transmission cooler maybe with a fan attached to it?

I personally disagree, I start to panic when my tranny temps approach 190.

Hey George,

Do you not have a trans cooler installed? I did when I put in my Yank and even in the hottest days the transmission doesn't get any hotter than around 155 and that's even if I'm running at the track.

Yeah that's very likely the main issue right there, the standard/stock trans cooler (apparently the automatic's Z51 package does NOT provide any bigger/better a cooler than the standard car has) is just not up to the task even in a car with stock power and a higher stall converter...add in some real power like you have along with hot outside temps and it's a recipe for super high trans temps.

Here's the one I bought from Summit:

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...0&autoview=sku

If the link doesn't work, just go to summitracing.com and do a search on "BMM-70297".

I have it temporarily mounted in front of my condensor but behind the Vararam. I only installed it that way for now so I could make sure it worked well enough before figuring out a more permanent installation location.

Hope that helps,
Christopher

What I meant was that yes it is a bit high but not surprising due to your mods. A trans cooler would help.

That part I haven't quite figured out yet. Some people have either put them in the back of the car or in a wheel well but I do know it needs good airflow so I'm not sure yet.

Either way I'll make sure to let you know and post up some pics of the install.

I don't like seeing AT temps above 200. 160 - 180 is a good operating range.

Is that temp is measured on the return from the cooler? That's pretty low for a maximum temp. I liked my temp to get to about 130* before flogging on the car.

FWIW, Plate type coolers reduce flow at low temps to prevent temps from being too cold.

That's the temperature that shows up on the DIC.

I installed mine directly in front of my condenser but it was causing my coolant temps to go up past 220 at the track so I'm trying something different now.

What I did yesterday was position the trans cooler so that only 60% of it sits in front of the condenser and the other 40% hangs below. It's only held in there temporarily now with wire but if it keeps my temperatures down this Wednesday at the track, I'm going to fabricate some brackets and mount it there permanently. Once that's done, I'll make sure to post some pictures of the installation.
