Just want to know where late 60's early 70's hp ratings based on same standards as todays ratings. Or our todays ratings understated based.
How would todays 430 HP rating be stated back then less or more?????
Gross HP was rated in the 60s 70s, that is, engine power without the accessories. Now you have parasitic drag losses on engines due to accessories when the engine is dynoed.

Hello,
A 1971 454 Corvette was rated at 365hp and the same 454 in 1972 was rated at 270hp. The 270Hp is a more accurate rating in real world performance rather than the 365 hp measured in the lab.
Todays 430Hp C6 would have been a monster in the 60's and could have beaten almost anything in a straight line and on a road course it would have been unbeatable.

Indeed. As I have mentioned before, I used to own a 1968 426 Roadrunner with a 4:10 Dana and a 4 speed.
That car was completely stock (excepting tires which were modern) and the best time I ever saw was mid 13s @ 104 mph.
My 2008 C6 would totally destroy that hemi Roadrunner and there weren't many cars faster than the hemi in 1968.
I may be off topic, but I think weight would be a big factor also back in the days. 430 hp was big back then but the car were much heavier.
Which car? Apples to apples, a Corvette weighed ABOUT the same as one does today. Most other cars were also similar weights, but if any thing, they were lighter back then.
Mustang
Challenger/Charger
GTO
Camaro
All these are heavier today, than they were in the late 60's

Had a friend with a dodge demon which had a hemi. I think it was a 1968? Was the fastest car in the neighborhood (unmodified). Was a monster but very dangerous to control flat out off the line.

My roadrunner weighed roughly 3800 lbs. And given that it was a 5 minute walk to the back seat, that's not too bad.

I'll tell you what was dangerous: trying to stop my Roadrunner from anything faster than about 60 mph.
4 wheel drum brakes with horrific fade - it actually frightened me a couple of times. And I won't even go into cornering...
Whenever someone tells you about the good old days - they're full of it. As far as cars go, today is the good ole days. In 1968, the C6 would be considered alien technology. It's just that much better.

Wow! I took the wrong guess. I thought those cars were heavier back in the days. Sorry, I didn't do my homework. Anyway, I had a 67 Camaro with the 327/300...engine came from a 63 Chevy Impala. This particular Camaro handled very well on the streets. During that time, the Camaro was awesome. TTT

Since 1972 hp ratings have been rated at "net horsepower" and before that is was "gross horsepower". Seems I've heard that you should deduct roughly 25 percent to arrive at the NET number. Not sure if this is correct though...

-- I've had several "Mopars". If my memory has not failed, I remember Challengers, and Chargers at 3,500+ lbs. I know that my 68 Dart with a 440 stroker, was approx 3,500.
