Default mild and wild part 2

Why in the world was the original thread closed? There are some important issues being addressed.

#1 Ed was (I presume) checking on the issue with the dealer (GM) so others might be prepared.

#2 I personally have questions about whether or not the tune could be detected after the fact. Yes - I KNOW the tune is STOCK after a return to stock, but can they (the dealer) DETECT that the tune was EVER other than stock? Chrysler has been able to detect that for freaking YEARS, so I'm sure GM can do it now.

So, why was it locked/closed? Do we have GM gestapo here? There was no name calling or anything that infringed on forum policy that I can see.

I called and spoke to the service manager yesterday. He said the cats failed due to a lean condition (I have no clue if that will even cause cats to fail). When I questioned him on how having the exhaust flaps open below 3000+ rpm could cause failure he had no answer. He put me on hold and came back after 5 minutes and still had no answer.

Basically his spin is that any modification voids warrantee which is not only BS but against the law. The car in question had a tune and CAI along with some other issues discussed in prior posts. M2W 100% has nothing to do with the cats failing. I have spoken to a number of the best tuners and they all laughed that anyone could claim that M2W would cause cat failure. In addition Jim Hall (Halltech) did studies over a year ago with the flaps open and closed and found no change in A/F ratios.

Easily I would est that over 20,000 cars are running around with m2w, fuses pulled, DIY switches and so on, if the flaps open under 3000+ rpm we would have many, many cat failures.

.

Agree totally with you Ed...The original poster had 2 different tunes in that car. No telling what damage was done or how the car was used (or abused). The fact that the car was put back to stock would leave me suspicious as well..
In normal (not WOT) running where the car spends 98% of it's time, The 02's regulate the fuel mix. I just put in a Wideband and agree with Jim H. I cannot see any A/F difference with M2W valves open or closed. The 02's always adjust for any small flow differences. If the cats were cooked from a lean mix, that was done at WOT and high RPM's where the M2W has no impact as the valves are open anyway. I suspect there's more to this story than we know, but everyone can rest assured the M2W had NOTHING to do with it.....The dealership was looking for an excuse and they found one.
