Default Steering Column Modifications?

Hello all.
I've been lurking here for some time, but not being a Vette owner yet, I haven't posted much.

I had plans to purchase a C-6 2007-2009 Convertible after I finish the last of my college courses -- probably in 2 yrs. -- but my better half may let me buy sooner.

My problem is that the only way I can comfortably fit in the vert is with the telescoping steering wheel option which is included in the 3LT package, which adds quite a bit of cost to the price. The coupe is out of the question, the bar in the back will give me a craniumectomy.

I'm 6'4" tall, and long waisted (shorter legs) so I need to recline the seat back a bit more than normal to get my head to fit. When I do that, the steering wheel is a little too far away for comfort. The telescoping wheel adjusts to a just right position, but without it, the wheel is just too far away.

So my stupid question is: Since the steering column probably has the room for the wires and such to move in and out 4-5" or so already, would it be possible to permanently "move" the steering wheel toward the driver by the same amount? Possibly with some kind of spacer or whatnot.

It sounds stupid even suggesting it, airbags and all, but I figure it might be possible. I just don't want to pay lots of extra thousands for features that I really don't want. Truthfully, the Vette comes standard with so many features that I find it just incredible.

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone knew of anyone who had looked into this modification, or also thought of it, probably taller drivers.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts,

Thomas Zarbo Jr.
