Default brake squealing

I've read several threads about the famous stock pads squealing/dusting, and have the horrible problem myself - but my question is: can I get away with putting on some new ceramics without resurfacing or replacing the rotors?

I was considering upgrading to Z51 rotors during the process (have 40k miles on the car) but was curious if there is a way to tell whether or not they need replacing and could save some cash now for other stuff that need tending to.

I replaced my pads with GM Ceramics at 20K miles and did nothing with the rotors. Everything worked out fine and all black dust has been eliminated.

I replaced my fronts with ceramic pads from Auto Zone and they've been great. Never turned the rotors.

Just replaced all 4 pads with ceramics from Gene Culley and I'm very happy with the results. No more school bus brakes.
The stock pads were all in fine condition, plenty of life left.

Did the burnishing procedure, then bed in procedures, and it feels good now.

I'm no longer ashamed to brake.
