I just got my Motive Brake Bleeder and will try it out on the wife's van tomorrow. Every thread I have read has said to use it for the pressure only and not to actually fill the container with fluid. Why is this? My guess is for fear that the cap will blow off spraying brake fluid everywhere? Thanks.
Well...Based on my experience I'd go with the crowd here... I have one and used it on my Audi numerous times with no blow-off issues, but the lid is a screw on with that car. Plenty secure. I bought a second hook-up for the Vette and the first time I used it I experienced the Blow-off as well. It's a tabbed type cap and really can't take much pressure. Freaked me out when it happened but No damage done. In the future I'll use it just as a pressure source. It is a minor inconvenience to have to re-fill the reservoir once or twice, but much safer IMO. Possibly a Zip tied loop would work to keep it in place. haven't tried that yet..
As far as the top blowing off the master cylinder, I've had that happen with no bad effects - but I don't put fluid in the bleeder tank. You only need 10 or 12 psi to push the fluid through the system for bleeding, so don't try to pump the thing up too high.
I think that if you pour a bunch of fluid into the bleeder tank (you'll probably have to pour several bottles in it) that you'll use a whole lot more fluid than if you just add a little bit to the master cylinder as needed.
Once you pour it into the bleeder tank I think it's going to degrade pretty quickly - although I guess you could try to pour unused fluid back into the original bottle for storage.
If you just pour it from the bottle into your master cylinder as needed, I think you can store the remaining fluid in its original container for a longer period of time before it's not useable - especially if you squeeze as much air out of the bottle and screw the top down tight.
At least that's why I don't put the fluid in the bleeder tank.
The instruction say put fluid in the bottle, I put about the amount that I feel i will bleed off. then I add if required, I bleed until the car is at the mark.
