I recently went with the MGW short shifter, and love the precision of it. It works GREAT for aggresive driving through the canyons. On the few times I've gone for a quick run through the gears/straight a way pulls, I've ground the gears a couple of times.
I believe I need to reprogram my brain and shifting. I now need to clutch just a hair sooner before putting it into the next gear, due to less time required for making a shift.
Anyone else find this to be true with short shifters and a hard passes/drag racing?
I have the MGW also (excellent shifter). But what I am about to write isnt shifter or driver related.
I somtimes get a grind out of 1st to 2nd. And sometimes completely miss 2nd. I dont think those errors are driver related. I think the grinding is from pressing the clutch pedal and yanking the shifter out of 1st gear too fast, doesnt stop the gates and/or syncs from properly aligning the gears (or something to this affect).
The missing of 2nd is when the tranny doesnt allow the shifter to go into 2nd at all, when that happens I never try to force the shift which can be bad. I guess to anybody witnessing this would think I cant shift or goofed up when in reality it wasnt me at all!
I think its really the tranny's fault and not so much ours!

try it with the shifter preloaded and just tap the clutch

Yes, I believe I have to pause a hair before pulling it out of gear, since it's now a shorter distance, and takes less time. A slightly more pronounced depression of the clutch just before shifting needs to happen...

Thanks for the advice Dennis, even though it did come from an auto guy!!
I made a few pulls tonight, and did not grind once!!!
Two things were different:
1) I've done the ranger clutch fluid reservoir turkey baster thing a few times over the last few hundred miles. I had done it all along, but had not done it recently.
2) I slightly loaded up the shifter, made a more pronounced and slightly ealier clutch depression, and then pushed it into gear.
I'll try not to bust on you for driving an auto in the future, but no promises...

You will have to exert more arm force with the shorter throw shifter to force the synchros to work. You have lost the mechanical advantage which comes with the long throw shifter.
