Default power gains question

I know that there is not a major power increase by upgrading exhaust but what can I expect to see with the flowmaster american thunder kit? What muffler system can I expect to see the biggest gains from?

has anyone dynoed any of the exhausts on the market to see if there is any real gain. I just want to know if I am only getting a better sound or a little bump in power also.

Different sound. General consensus is that gains have not really been proven.

Depends on previously fitted upgrades as well. If the car is stock, you'll get an increase that is maybe a slight more than the repeatable margin of error for your average dyno.

If however, you're like me and have a large cam, vararam, headers, x-pipe, etc. that you are still choking through the stock mufflers, switching out the cans may yield as much as, in my estimate, 10-15 hp.

Chevy documents and advertizes a 6 HP gain with the NPP dual mode exhaust.

Most manufactureres will claim around 5 rwhp. Good luck trying to measure that. Aftermarket exhaust should only be purchased for sound. Personally I wouldn't waste my money on them, I would get a set of headers instead.

The following are dyno readings between 07 z06 mufflers open and the stock cans. When tuned for the stock cans. If it would have been tuned for them
It should have gained a few more peak. but a nice increase though the power band.Car was 08 ls-3 with headers

So that pretty much backs up the claims that the NPP type exhaust is worth 6hp?

With stock header 5-6 will probably be it. More for sound than power. Headers will put out approx. 25 hp at which time the exaust will give 0-5. Most of the restriction is in the headers.
