My 05' Vette ran into some problems yesterday. As I was driving down the road the "check charging system" alert came on. I watch it drop from 13,12,11 until all systems started shuting down. The antilock brakes,a/c, radio and so on. I pulled over in a gas station when it hit 9 volts and had it towed back to my garage. I had just got done jumping all over it just before the system faliure started so I'm guessing I blew the alternator. Automatic by the way. I've torn my 73' apart from top to bottom but I haven't done much work on my C6. My question is how hard is it to replace my alternator on a C6? I see it has a pulley system attached to it. A new AC Delco is going to run my $450. I could not find any threads as to what is involved in swapping out a new one. The 73' would take my less than 1/2 hour. I checked with the dealership and they quoted me a 2 hour work time to replace it. So am I missing some extra steps for this process? Any help would be great in advace. Thanks
Also I just had a passport 9500i and ZR3 radar detector installed a day eairler. It was wired into the ignition fuse. I don't know if this would have anything to do with the alternator failure.

The swap is fairly straight forward, remove the serpentine belt, unplug, unbolt, then repeat in reverse with the new one. $450 is WAY,WAY high on price. Check with Gene at gmpartshouse.com

I checked all the local autozones, Pepboys and so on and they had rebuilt ones for $300. I'll check out that site. I hate rebuilds though. especailly from these guys. Even though they have a lifetime replacement. It just means that I will be replacing them for a lifetime.
Looking at the engine compartment is there anything else that needs to be removed to get that serpentine belt out? It looks tight. And that pulley underneath.. I'm not sure if that is a headache. Thanks for the reply.
you don't have to take the alternator belt completely off...just loosen tensioner for some slack to slip belt off the alt.pulley...leave belt in place...
Have it tested before you fork out big $$$s to replace the alternator. Lots of people (including me) have gotten this message and not had a problem with the alternator.

I was thinking I could just take the tension off the belt, pull the alternator and do a swap. I'll give it a shot, thanks

I kind of rulled the battery out. Put on a charger overnight and retested it today. The volts started draining right away. Thanks
Generally, places like autozone and napa offer free starter, battery, and alternator testing. Definitely recommend a test before spending money to replace the unit. if you have a voltmeter, testing the alternator is an easy procedure. Replacing this alternator is about as straightforward as they get. It's easy to reach, and the mounting and wiring is dead simple.
One thing you didn't mention: is this the original battery? How old is it, if not the original? Any major discharges as in going dead? Have you had the TSBs done?
I'm was being a puss. It took about 20 minutes with no issues. Much eaiser than the 73'. Battery was fine alternator was shot. I think(I know) I blew it up pushing the RPMs to the limit to many times. Thanks for the help to all.
