this is a lsx stat, what is this thing in red that i circle? or better question is what is it's function in this thermostat? thanks

It prevents air pockets from forming in the coolant, causing hot spots. I helped troubleshoot a boat motor that was "overheating" causing it to go into limp mode. Turned out an air pocket had formed under the temp sender and would not move. That air pocket would spike the temp from 180 to 230 in seconds! We had to drill a hole (in the same place as the pellet)in the thermostat to keep it from returning.

just an airbleed. Not neccecary if the system is bled right but is nice feature that most t-stat manufactures use these days. I have probably put in a thousand t-stats and they almost all have one.
It would be nice to if you had a leak and were adding to it until you could repair. fgood luck
