Has anyone had a problem with what sounds like a pinion gear whine? My 05 C6 has 12000 miles on it and the noise is the most noticeable at highway speeds. It will make a intermitant whine while it is just between coasting and appling power for a brief period. doesn't make the noise under a drivetrain load. Seems to be getting worse, as all noises seem to you know. Thanks for any info.
There have been other posts on rear end noise. There's a tech bulletin out there as well. As mentioned above, changing the fluid may correct your problem.
Changed the diff fluid and replaced with RP synthetic about 1200 miles ago. This noise isn't the common chatter or grind that I've read about in most posts. Perhaps its nothing. I may see what GM says about it though. I'll also check the tech bulletins. Thanks
My 05 z51 makes the same noise at cruise on the freeway. 13,000 mile car. I recently had pfadt diff mounts installed, and the noise is really pronounced. I'll try the diff. and posi lube change.
I know of one owner on another "corvette forum" making the same noise and he had his transmission and rear-end rebuilt under warranty. He said the noise is gone but don't know which one fixed the problem. My local transmission guy said I probably have a bad pinion bearing (bearings) or incorrect clearance.......... My warranty is up. Later
My 05 Z51 makes the same noise at cruise on the freeway just turned over 25K. Dealer said that was normal. Their normal BS... I'll change the fluid in the spring.
The fluid change didn't help at all earlier.I've got an extended warranty. But, I've put the car away for the winter. Next spring I'll take it to the dealership and see what they say. I believe there is probably a bearing problem. Thanks All.
I had my rear differential checked out by my local transmission shop /// all good. He said my transmission needs to be rebuilt. I'll probably buy one on ebay for $1400-1500us.
Last night I changed clutch fluid via the ranger method. While out for a test drive I noticed a whine at about 55/60 when I let off the gas. After a couple of high rpm shifts it was gone and although I tried, thankfully I could not get it to duplicate the whine again.
Maybe yours has something to do with the clutch fluid or clutch. Just a thought.
My 08 manual has had a rear end whine since new. I now have 11,000 miles and it continues the whine at the same speeds. I can hear it in 5th or 6th gear from 68 to 73 mph. I can only hear it when the radio is off. It sounds like the ring and pinion gear is out of spec. Once I take it in for service, I will give an update.
