A good friend of mine was telling me today that his 2005 C6 displayed the dreaded column lock message. He took it to the dealer and was told that this was the first documented case on the C6. I know this was a big issue on C5's as I just had to have the lock plate removed on my car. Just think, 8 years after the first C5 and still the same old problems. Has anyone else heard of this.

I have had three column lock issues on my '05 coupe that required the module to be replaced but none in the past two years since I replaced the OEM battery with a Diehard.
The 'service column lock' is a common code thrown when a dead or near dead battery comes back to life. In almost all cases there is nothing wrong with the column lock (like the C5's).
There have been a few column lock failures reported on this forum over the years, but this is a very small number compared to the frequency of this message itself. We used to hear about this code all the time when DBS was still prevalent. Your buddies car is not unique even if it really has an actual column lock problem.
Have not had this problem with my 06 Vert. Have not heard of this being an issue for 06 and beyond.
There were no more of the C5 type column locks on C6s after the 2005 model year. Your friend's dealer is mistaken, his is not the first documented case.

He had the car repaired at the dealer but I have not spoken to him about exactly was was done to take care of the problem.

The column lock on the C6 is an electronic module and unlike the C5 column lock cannot be modified to override it. I know, I have had two of them replaced.

The 2005 is the only C6 equipped with the column lock device.
2006 and newer C6's don't have a column lock, so obviously *cannot* exhibit the problem.
