Here's the deal: I have a automatic c5 and I'm thinking about switching to a manual transmission instead of purchasing a new car. Is there any draw backs to doing this type of switch? I have a manual C5 transmission with 35,000 miles on it and my current a4 transmission has 65,000 miles on it. I have a good deal on the install and I'm just wanting to know if this is a good idea or not. I really like my car and I don't want to get rid of it, but I want a manual at the same time. I just am nervous about there being problems, so if anyone has any insight on this issue your comments would be greatly appreciated.
Since the entire drive train has to be removed to do a routine clutch job, it should be simple to replace the slush box with a manual. The real issue will be the wiring and the programing needed to let the car know that it's no longer an automatic.
You might get better answers by posting this in the C5 section.
Most people will tell you that the expense, hassle, and unknown problems; will make the tranny swap a bad idea.

I've done auto-to-manual conversions on rare-but-not-particularly-valuable cars, where the swap was worth it because it was interesting and because finding a similar car was very difficult.
Not so with the C5, particularly these days. Probably the best case against the swap is the ready availability of used C5s with manual transmissions already installed by the factory.
Nonetheless, it sounds kind of fun. You'll have to dig up replacement clutch and brake pedals, clutch hydraulics, etc., of course. But the real trick will be figuring out what electronic changes need to be made. For example, don't automatic-equipped Corvettes impose a low redline when in neutral, to prevent neutral drops? You'll need to address those kinds of issues.
