Default Oil usage?

I bought a used 05 C6, it has headers, exhaust, cold air and a tune. I have put around 7000 miles on it and even though my oil change alert was at 65% the check oil light came on. It was 2 qts low. i do get on it occasionally and drive it about 3000 miles a month. The car now has 40000 on it, is this normal or should I be concerned? Any info would be apprecitated. Thanks

The check oil light has nothing to do with the % change information.
It needs to be reset at each change to have any value. Since you have no idea what the oil level was to start, you have no idea if you have an issue. It could have been a quart down, therefore 1 quart in 7K miles is no big deal.

Change the oil, fill to the dipstick indicator, and monitor for the next few thousand miles. Chances are Nothing at all is wrong.

What ever happened to checking the oil level with the stick and checking the tires with a gauge every other tank? or even once a month.

No never mind just wait till the idiot light comes on.......

My wifes friend drove their Minivan around for a week with the low oil lamp on till it stopped running. Last oil change was more than 10K ago. I just walked away.......

Some LS2's are massive oil eaters. GM is aware of the problem and if you complain loud enough they'll help you monitor it and possibly warranty it.

my 06 used 2 quarts in between oil changes this time. I told the dealer and they are going to track the consumption. I have a sheet in the glovebox to track it. If it gets low I need to take it to them and they will measure and add more.

Mine is definitely using oil, I haven't measured it but I suspect I will put in 1.5-2 quarts in 6,000 miles.

What is the remedy under Warranty?

None. GM does not consider that excessive...(nor does any other manufacturer )

I just checked on the ls1gto.com forum and found this:

"Dealership in Socal said there is a new service bulletin on LS2 motors that consume at least a quart of oil every 1,000 miles. GM will replace that LS2 engine with new pistons and new rings if your engine is still under warranty."

Pull the air bridge collar away from the throttle body and check for oil. If it looked like mine (see below), you might want to consider installing an oil catch can & modified oil fill cap/breather.

I also have a '05 and always had similar "oil consumption" issues, but I'm dealing with a s/c. I've recently installed a catch can and have finally determined the source of the oil contaminating the intake, which is the PCV line which runs from the rear of the drivers side valve cover, around the rear portion of the motor/firewall and routed back up along side the passengers valve cover. Not to be confused with the passengers side valve cover hose which feeds into the air bridge.

Now, I'm catching ~1 quart a month (~1,200 miles per month) which still seems excessive to me, so this is just step 1. I assumed I would be catching oil vapors which would accumulate into droplets the oil catch can over a period of time, but this is more like "sucking in" oil directly from perhaps as the rockers splash oil around inside the valve cover. I need to pull my driver side valve cover to see if the internal baffles had been removed too allow additional clearance for aftermarket roller rockers I had installed awhile back. So the step 2 to figure out why so much oil? But, my oil consumption has been an issue even before my install of my s/c.

Anyway, something to consider and a easy process to check your TB for oil. Here's what my TB & collar looked like before the catch can :

Would I want to do that - I don't know if you'll get the original factory fit?

I'd add a quart or two before I'd let GM tear my engine down.

You are smart!

Not GM though, but a dealership. I had to trade my 2002 Z28 for a Mazda after I let them tear into my engine due to the piston slap noise. Even though oil analyses came back ok, I still let them replace the pistons, rods and rings. I totally screwed up and I paid for it.

You really need to get the details of the tsb to see what they are talking about, it might be a new short block. The dealer just can't slap new pistons and rings into a used short block without machine work.

Hah...they can and they will! That's exactly what they did to my car. The block had 20k plus miles. Is it right? NO! Will they do it? YES!!
