I have an 05 A4 base coupe. I don't know what gears it has but it downshifts as bad as my C5 did. My intentions is for good, quick downshifting. My C5 sucked until I changed from 3:15 to 3:42's and had the shift points changed. The car then down shifted one gear with just a slight push of the pedal, at any speed. It was then a pleasure to drive. My car now, as did the C5 downshifts at a bad place, sometimes I have to make it downshift again which puts the rpm through the roof. The downshifting is better at higher speeds. I have been reading the posts on shifting and haven't yet gotten any good info. I'm hoping someone can help me understand what is up with all this. I want to know how to improve this car as well as my last was improved. Thanks.

Reason: Better explanation.
I have an 05 A4 base also (vert.) I gather your not happy with the downshifting, but I don't know what info to offer. This is just how the A4 does it.
I eventually swapped it out for a built A4 along with a 2800 (flashes to 3200) stall converter and 3.73 rear gears. Shift point were then widened in the tune and the downshift problem (if it can be called that) resolved, but it sounds like you know all this. So why not just tune the shift points wider?
Well, it looks like I will be doing this. I was just trying to understand how to do it. I don't know what to change the shift points to or even how to do it. I had the previous car tuned and such. I'm wondering if I buy a Diablo tuner is all this simple. Are there guide lines. What else is affected, line presures?
With C5's there are alot of differentials for sale, not the same for C6's. I haven't found much talk at all regarding gears for automatics. So far all I've found is talk about gearing for pure acceleration, although these matters are related.
Anyway, it sounds like you've done exactly the same thing. What made you do the 3.73's. Is you engine stock? Mine is. Thanks for the interest.
