Default Problem with Vararam New Upper

Okay as most of you know the older Vararam's had a very weak upper half which warped.

I emailed Vararam and got a new upper half, which was excellent on their part to uphold the warranty on the unit. I got the new upper half which is twice as thick as the old unit, very sturdy and way better made.

Problem: The old filter will not fit into the new unit, I tried to force it in and it began to tear the side gasket. The filter will fit very tight without the side gasket so that will be okay. The big problem is that the old coupler does not fit at all onto the neck of the new upper. I tried everything including using screwdrivers to try and pry the silicone coupler onto the neck but because it is thicker the coupler will not go on.

I emailed Patrick with this problem and have not gotten a response, only that the filter will fit but you need to force it in as it is tight.

The problem is that the silicone coupler is only about 2" wide and their is a size difference between the vararam new upper neck which is about 4" to the MAF neck which is 3 3/4". I did some checking and only could find the 4" size.

Anyone else coming across this problem with the old coupler?

I would suggest buying some new couplers...

Check out extremepsi.com they are fairly inexpensive and look good!

They warned me that it would be a tight fit. That's the way they wanted it. I put a little WD40 around the edges and it slips right in.

I went to pepboys and picked up a new coupler for $10 bucks. Its a slicker material and is way easier to install/remove when needed than the previous coupler.

I used silicone grease, this does two things. One, it helps installing the filter and two, it helps seals the filter to the side. I know the filter technically seals on the bottom, but it won't hurt to seal it to the sides as well. I also used silicone grease on the bottom seals to help seal it. Make sure you use silicone grease though, as regular petroleum grease will deteriorate the seals over time.

Thanks guys, I tried the WD40 but it would not slip on. The old coupler just barely made it onto the old unit and I compared the neck difference and it came out to be 1/4" difference in diameter due to the thickness of the material.

I guess my only option is to get another coupler and just go with a 4" unit.

Mine was tight, but I was able to get it in. My coupler fit fine.

I will send you a new coupler that will more easily fit on the Vararam neck. It will be 4" ID !!!
Thanks
Steve
