Default Need help with cam decision

Hey guys, I have c6 auto. Mods done are:
headers, no cats, bullet muffs and I'm looking at installing a cam for sound. HP would be a bonus, but sound is what I'm looking for. I liked the sound of the Megadeath, but was told that I would need to change out my torque converter, it wouldn't idle and basically it would drive like crap (this is coming from a tuner). I don't want to have a car that I keep working on. Can I get suggestions please? Sorry but I'm just a dummy when it comes to this technical stuff.
thanks
John

This is the first I've ever heard of someone wanting a cam mainly for the sound.

There are a lot of good cam choices out there. Do you have a tuner in mind? They can probably make some good recommendations based on their experience. Otherwise the first cam'd auto that comes to mind is member Tony B4. He has a Cartek 3x cam and is making 441rwhp and running low 11s. Hopefully he'll chime in or you can pm him.

If you have the "Stock" converter you cant go to a "very" radical cam... it won't idle, the more radical the cam (its what you want to "SOUND Baddd") the loser OR higher stall converter you will need...

To get that really rough idle you will need (a guess) 3200 stall converter...

Or a "mild" cam will give you a rough idle but not very noticeable..

However the OP is NOT looking for as you put it a "Combo" he doesn't seem to care too much about "Performance" he is more interested in "Sound" or the "Impression" his car will make as he idles through a car show... All that is fine and well... "BUT" he'll never get that Baddddd Azzzzzzz sound with a stock converter as it will prevent the engine from idling as it should with a big cam...

As for me personally I'd love to run as fast as Tony, and have my stock exhaust system & cam.. sorta a sleeper...Kids would look at me and say WOW look at the "Old Dude" driving a Vette... Then I'd like to see the look on their face "IF" I pulled away from them, of course I wouldn't do it on the street!!

"Big cam with stock heads". Your tuner can make any, well almost any, cam sound bigger or smaller, but have to agree, picking a cam for sound doesn't SOUND like a good idea. LOl

Just remember if you get aggressive(cam), you will need a converter.

Here is a video of my Cartek 3x cam.(rest of my mods are in the sig)

If you have any questions, feel free to pm me. I would strongly suggest giving Cartek a call, they are a forum sponser.

I have a Crane 228/232 on a 112+5 that "sounds like a cam" in my MN6
and it idles at 975. I don't know if that idle is to high for your converter or not. The +5 provides a bit more vacuum at low RPM's than the more normal advance of 2 degrees.

The Comp XER 224/230 is a popular choice for the C5/C6 that many folks report has lots of performance, some lope and good drivability.

If you want a bigger cam than these two, I think that you'll need to change the converter. Driveability is very subjective, so you really should try to ride in a car like yours with a cam and the stock converter before you decide.

with a cam you will almost always need a stall for an auto. If you want sound and not too much power stay around 230 duration. You still may need a stall but could probably get away not having one. If you get a 112 or 113 lsa you will get a rougher lopier sounding idle than you will with a 114 as well.

I've an LPE GT11 in my '07 A6 coupe, idles at 650 rpm (118 LSA) and with AFR 205s, ARH headers, SpinFast 92, etc. and CoW 3.15s a great combo. The GT11 is not a lopey idle type cam but has tremendous mid range punch, great pull thru redline and no loss of bottom end power. Power is in the 440 rwhp range and with a stock TC it all works together awesome.

I have a Lingenfelter cam also.....224/228 114 LSA
.590 lift (A6 trans....stock converter) . This is the largest cam I would run with the A6 trans/stock converter. My car idles at 750 rpms, drives well and has a nice lope.
Do your homework on this...........you can really ruin the drivability of a car with the wrong cam choice (especially with a automatic).
