Default Nitrogen in tires

Just did a search on this topic. About to have the PS2's put on my 08 Z06( 345/30/19 & 275/35/18) & after checking with various sources including LPE, this should transform how the car handles, rides, & be much more quiet than the stock runflats just like it did on my C6 & the C5 I used to have.( I realize the use of nitrogen has no affect on ride, handling, noise etc) The threads regarding using nitrogen have been very helpful, & the benefit of not having to fill the tires nearly as often looks like a nice benefit( I know the thrifty ones are appalled that one would have to pay a small fee for this unless they go to Costco, but fortunately I can afford this small fee). Thanks to all those who did the research on the use of nitrogen & put that info on the forum.

I use a tank of dry n2 to fill and top off tires. Tank costs about 14.00
and is at 1800 psi. You can fill 4 tires for about $6.00 worth of n2.

I got 7000 miles out of the rear tires & the fronts look to have maybe 4 thousand miles left. Can't wait to get rid of them, & I'll report back when I get the new ones on. From talking to others that have made the switch on the Z06, I'm sure they'll be great.

Thanks for that info. Would you happen to know who would have the tank that I could purchase?

with jdurhan

I wrote up several paragraphs earlier, but I never hit the "submit reply" button because.....well, if somebody already has their mind made up I'll never change it.

So, I'll just say that I agree with Jim, and mention that I use a special mixture of gases that is 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 1% other gases.

I'm holding out for Hydrogen or Helium filled tires. They'll probably leak like a sieve since they are such small molecules, but the car will definitely weigh less and therefore will be faster.

Be sure to use Hydrogen. Then your car will really explode down the road

Me too.

For those that must have pure nitrogen in their tires, a wheel like this is a must have. Notice it has two Schrader valves, so that you can purge out the regular air that is only ~80% nitrogen, while inflating with 100% nitrogen.

Good one. Contrary to what some people think, I was not there when the Hindenburg exploded.

Actually it only burns. But I think that must be where the term "burning up a set of tires" comes from.

Hi Glenn. Here we are with the technical stuff again and it's been so long since my last chemistry/physics class.

See if you think this logic is correct.

If you wanted to fill a tire with hydrogen to a pressure of 30psi, the weight of the hydrogen would still be equivalent to the same weight of any other gas, because the volume of the container (tire) does not change, as it is controlled by the external pressure of one atmosphere.

So no matter which gas, hydrogen, nitrogen, or plain air was being used the weight to accomplish 30psi would be equal.

Different gases have different weight. Using identical volume and identical psi, a hydrogen filled container will weigh less than one filled with air.
