Hi,
Why not cut a hole in the fan shroud to create better air flow and leave on the stock unit? I realize one would not get the ponies gained from a aftermarket unit, but save monies on a low cost mod? I had a C5 and now learning about my 08 vert, looking it over seems possible.
Thanks
I think the stock filter medium is paper, the moisture from a cut shrould would damage a paper filter. The aftermarket filters are usuallly a washable, oiled medium that doesn't dissolve in water.
the reason for cutting the shroud is as stated above. Your paper filters will not be able to stop any water that comes through there. You can replace your airfilters with k&n oem type's and cut your shroud to let some air through that way. But its mostly there to keep the air in front of your condensor. When you have an after market intake it blocks that hole and keeps some of the air down there.

I've posted this before, but I installed the K & N filter then cut the shroud and made my own air cleaner cover. See the photo below and my website for details.
