Default Differential Case

Hello all,

This may be over reacting on my part but here is the situation.

I have 1250 miles on a 2008 MN6, base C6 convertible that I bought new. I am going to have 4.10 gears installed. Every Corvette shop that I talk to wants to swap out the entire differential. I would be getting new gears but a used case, technically a rebuild.

I think my 1250 mile differential case is probably newer than the one that I would receive in the swap. My case and gears are not returned to me; they are kept by the shop and sent back to the rebuilder and someone else ends up with my 1250 mile differential case.

Is the age of the differential case of any importance? Does it have any identifying numbers on it that would make it easy for a dealer to identify that a different differential unit had been installed?

Thanks for your help.

John T.

Reputable shops will check their cores very thouroughly. Ask the tuner who he is getting the diff from, call them and ask thier inspection procedure. Should put your mind to rest. While I see your point, I think its a bit over anxious. Look at it this way... an case with miles on it likely has been cast very well. Yours could have a flaw that with a few miles on it will explode!

When I upgraded my diff, I was given a new case. I know it doesn't always happen that way but you might ask them to source a new case with your build. I dont think most people care to much, as long it was a good case and it was built right. I used RPM Transmissions for mine...

rpm transmissions sells them brand new with no exchange and micro polished gears. Should put your mind at ease.

I can make a few recomendations. You could send your original differential in to us and have us install the desired gear and return it to you along with your original gears. One other option is have a local tuner(I'm not sure where you are located) but there are shops capible of doing a gear install properly and one could be local. I have as mentioned above built many differentials using new cases and internals. This has allowed us to get our core count up for future swaps. The diffs that we build even with used cases are cleaned, inspected and look like new when shipped. I personally feel a properly built diff using a used case is nothing to worry about BUT on the other hand I see your point clearly. Give us a call sometime and we will see what your thoughts are and if we don't get the job we can point you towards someone who can help you.
