Default Cooling problem

My car seems to like to run hot. It was 33 degrees outside the other day and it still was running 216. If I would give it a little gas it would drop down. I could put it in neutral and rev it up, and again it would drop down. If I put the shifter into drive to where the rpms were higher (around 3k) it would drop down to about 190. I noticed today that even when it gets up to 216 sitting still at an idle, I can put my hand on the top coolant line going to the radiator and its hot, but if I touch the one that goes from the thermostat housing to the radiator it is not hot at all. I can hold my hand on it without a problem even with the coolant at 216. It never gets over 216, seems to heat up to that point and not go over it. Does this sound like my thermostat is sticking? Anything you can think of to check?

Sounds like you are keeping your eyes on the H2O temp..
I mainly watch my oil temp..
Here in N.California, my oil temp is usually around 232 - 236 F.
When I am @ Thunderhill or going through the corners @ Infineon, my oil temp goes up to 280 to 288.

Now w/ this in mind for the track, I am considering a high flow radiator.

Your water temp. is fine.

Try a 160 degree thermostat if you don't already have one in.

Why put in a lower temp thermostat? The stock engine is made to run most efficiently with the stock thermostat. I believe you may actually lose power by running a lower temp thermostat. If the idea is to fool the ECM into making your engine run richer you will definitely lose power.

Some may believe lower temp thermostats add power because their car runs better in cold weather but this is because the air is denser and more oxygen is getting into your engine NOT because the engine is running cooler.

Could be some air in the system. Have you checked the overflow tank. Is it full?
Maybe the fan is not coming on. Next time you have it out, and you get to 210 turn the A/C on. This will command the fans on. See if your temp drops.
Read post 6 on this thread and decide if you want the engine running over 212 degrees..
