My C6 produces an engine smell inside the car while at rest. I believe that after driving the car awhile, engine smell (like oil but no visible oil leaks) is being sucked into the ventilation system intake while the car is not moving. Doesn't happen when moving.
As a test, I placed the ventilation/climate system on recirc and got no smell. Turned off recir, smell results. Did a tightness test on the piece of moulding on top of the firewall that seals the hood to the body using a piece of paper between the moulding and the hood, and it seems tight.
This has just started happening in the last few weeks since it got cold here in Virginia.
when I got my headers installed I had a exhaust smell for about a week in mine when I drove it, especially at idle!!! It stopped smoking\smelling in the car about a week later..
well I know if it's a z51 with headers it could be the line runing up to the tranny cooler is rubbing on the header on the pasanger side and be leaking a little at first then it will get bigger and leave a bit of a puddle on the ground. at least that's what happened to mine anyway if you can't braze the line it would suck to replace the line since it was the one going all the back to the tranny not the short chunk lol.
Mine is stock Z51 2007 A6, sounds like same issue. On a side note, I hear the "grinding noise" when I make slow turns, so maybe I have a rear differential fluid leak or something which could explain the smell ? I took my car to the dealership after work today so they can fix that grinding noise (probably change out my rear diff fluid and send me on my way, unless the seal is leaking and then I'll be in this Pontiac G6 for a while lol).
@lockman - What headers do you have that rubbed the line?
I went and checked the weatherstripping again and I noticed that the stripping on the driver's side is about 1/2 inch short and therefore not sealing the engine compartment. I gues I need a new piece of weatherstripping.
lockman, i have lg headers and have had this smell off and on for a month now. i just looked under the car and there is red tranny fluid drops dripping from the center plate. I checked the lines up front and they do not touch the headers the leak appears to be somewhere in the tunnell. taking it to the dealer tuesday. i may have chevy flat bed it there cause that fluid might catch fire dripping onto hot headers. any thaughts, the drip is absolutely coming from the tunnell
