Default O2 sensor and Cat removed problem

Hi guys,

I recently bought an '05 C6 Corvette, very low milage. The previous owner has removed the cat converter and therefore the check engine light is permanently on. When I read the error via OBDII it says cat performance insufficient, which is obvious.

I would be thankful if you can tip me on those :

1. Is the car losing performance because of this ? I've red various oppinions, some say removing the cat gives an extra 10% power (or approx 40-50 hp extra), but others oppose saying the computer will actually reduce the power when the O2 sensors see wrong data before and after the cat so the effect of removing the cat converter will actually result in loss of performance.

2. Given i've no way of putting the cat back since I've no idea where it is, is it possible to cheat the O2 sensors that everything's ok so that the car goes to it's optimal settings and the check-engine light goes away ? I've also been told that O2 sensor only needs some kind of resistor added to reduce it's input/output voltage to trick the computer. Then I saw "chip" on ebay for about $80 doing this, but did not mention Corvette C6 specifically as a compatible model..

So what do you think ?

Thanks a lot upfront !
