This was the strangest thread I saw on the forum so far, the guy was just pulling out of Hooters and did a hard punch acceleration and blew his rear end out. I find this extremely hard to believe, what could have happened and if you were doing a head/cam / header mod to a 2005 would you strengthen the rear end after reading this?

Happens all the time with IRS cars. Wheel hop or tire shake will destroy a rear end. You can do a search and find many threads on broken rears and wheel hop. Autos are much better but the manual 6 speeds will destroy a rear if you do not lift or if you ignore it and try to "drive through it"
Dead hooking with a sticky tire or drag radial will also kill a rear. Most individuals go to a better shock like bilstein HD and or poly bushings. You can also get the DTE brace so that if you destroy the rear it does not take the trans too!
It was on a blacktop surface with some small ripples in the pavement. I was pulling out of a parking lot and held the throttle for just a second too long as minor wheel hop developed. The rearend did not blow apart, but cracked open. About 30 minutes later I could hear the gears whine at highway speeds. I knew what happended before I even inspected the car, my rear facia was covered with gear oil splatter. The car was under warranty and GM fixed it but I knew I had a problem that had to be fixed someday. There seems to be two major options. The most cost effective (and maybe the most robust) is to replace the differential with a C5 differential. It requires some modification to the car for this settup to fit. The other option is a 2006 differential case and upgrade to the output shafts. RPM and DTE are two forum vendors that offer these replacement differentials. They do not require any modification to install but are more expensive up front and if they break it is more expensive to repair.
Thanks a lot that really helps. Hey, so to avoid dumping the rear end all I have to do is not dump the clutch right? If I go less than 3k if I want to hit it and quickly move to 2nd I should be fine right?
I think you are best off talking with one of the vendors that specializes in differentials. I would call either RPM or DTE. As any good business person they are going to want to sell you a product. However, I think they both have very good reputations and will talk with you honestly (and a lot more professionally than I can) about what is most likely to break a 2005 differential case. There are many 2005 C6's running around with their original case and no trouble. I upgraded my 2005 differential because I did a head and cam job and wanted the extra peace of mind.
God Dammit Im getting a head/cam done right now..... Now I'm more paranoid than ever thanks a lot

ok now I'm a little worried about this. I've just had a H/C done as well. Is this a roll the dice, it could happen kind of problem. Or a, take a number cause it's going to happen kind of problem?
Manuals are at way more risk than auto's. The added strain of clutch dumps and drive train shock on launches seems to destroy manual 05 diffs. I know of guys that have had manual 05's though and done upwards of 300 5k clutch dumps on em and not broken em. It seems to be luck of the draw on these things but and upgrade on a modded car is just worth the peace of mind if you ask me. Plus you can get a better ratio and squeeze a little more out of your vette!
