Default Thermostat change question?

I'm trying to change the thermostat on my LS2. I've got the hose pinched closed, but still getting a lot of coolant out of the engine. I have the floor covered with shop towels, but when I loosen the bottom bolt, coolant continues to flow from the block. How much do you normally lose during what I thought would be a simple and relatively clean "5 minute task". While I'm at it, do you add/replace fluid to the coolant overflow tank or to the radiator.

Thanks in advance.

I took the lower hose off and drained all the coolant to avoid a mess. Sounds like you are too late for that option.

you should drain the radiator that way you will need nearly the specified amount. Be very very very careful when you install the tstat to get the little nipple in the correct position and to be sure the gasket doesn't roll or get pinched. This simple 5 minute upgrade has caused more angst than you can possibly imagine. Also when you refill the reservoir do it very very very slowly about 1/2 quart at a time to avoid an air bubble. Massage the hoses to help. When you are done turn the car on and let it run for a while. Watch the temp and check the reservoir level. Good luck!

That's correct. Get the engine temp up to about 180 - 185, then shut it off to let it cool down (I know, it'll take awhile). This simple process allows the engine to purge any air out of the system and then pull in more coolant to fill it up after it cools.

I drained the radiator and the hoses. Then you fill it back through the resivor. Make sure after you start it that you dont let the resivor get empty. It can result in a lot of air in your system causing water pump issues.
