Default Bummed out....

So I pick up my brand new C6 three weeks ago and drive it to a storage facility and park it.

I drove it for the day, and racked up less than 100 miles.

If you have seen my first few posts, you will notice that I can't bring my little lady home, I live in the Country on a dirt road that is in serous need of a road grader.

Today I register it and decide to pay it a visit and take it for a spin.

I get in the car and I see a 6" horizontal crack in the windshield going from the driver side molding straight across almost reaching my Hud!

So I bring it to my dealer and he claims it's a stress crack, **** happens, sorry, etc, appointment, warranty along with a loner car in two weeks.

For any experienced wrenches or glass installers, please, is this a biggie to replace? I have Hud, and what looks like the On-star or GPS antenna nailed to my windshield right next to my rear view mirror.

Man,,,, 100 miles and I haven't even made my first payment yet.

Now I have to replace my front glass.

This sucks big time!

I did a search for C6 cracked windshields and came up with nothing.

If my grammer and spelling is off please forgive, I am pounding down a $10.00 cigar and a tall glass of Straight Jim Bean

Yes, it's a big deal but not one that an experienced, capable glass person can't handle. Understand your feelings but don't worry, it'll be done right. Bon chance!

Just to elaborate, the glass is slightly unusual but not for the onstar; for the hud. They'll get the right glass, and it'll be installed correctly. Good thing you've got the dealer standing behind it.

Ahhh, no need to stress out. Windows are pretty straight forward to replace. Don't have to worry about matching any color's?
My GM daily driver got a stress crack too, dealer took care of it no problem, no scratches, mess, etc.
Your handling it right, have a drink, smoke, and relax.....

Thanks Guys,

Yes, I think the parts guy might have tried a glass vendor first.

Reason being,,, he phoned me back and stated a couple of weeks because it had to be OEM glass and that he had to order it.

I just don't want leaks, wind noise, and some wanna bee installing it, etc.

This is my first new vett in seven years.

I have owned a new 80, 82, 84, 89, and 2002 Vettes, and not a one went into the shop for any warranty issues.

This has made me nausiated, I stopped in at a smoke shop for a good Cigar and picked up some booze.

This baby was my Retirement present,,,,20 years of Law Enforcement, and I'm now all done at 50!

I sure Hope that I haven't picked up a bail out problem child

Thanks again,

The problem is very minor, and so is the replacement. People get chipped/cracked windshields all the time.

I had my "hud/onstar" windshield replaced. Cant tell it was even done. The first two windshields that came in were wrong (no hud), so that was a bit of a pita. The glass shop ended up ordering direct from a Chevy dealership. just make sure you get the HUD glass, others have installed a regular windshield and said it works but it isnt quite as bright as the corrrect windshield.

Thanks!

The fellow that came out asked if I had the Hud and GPS so now that you mentioned this it looks like he knows what he is ordering.

Yeah, I'm thinking the worst, what can you do though?

MY wife mentioned, it's warranty so don't worry about it, and if it is installed with issues and persists, they do it again.

Three times they fix it and it's a lemon and you get a new car.

Is this True?

Prior to the windshield R&R, I would want to understand the cause of the stress cracks so that this does not reoccur.

It could have been caused by the sun. If the window had a minor defect or was cracked at the factory and not visible then leaving it out with the windows up and the sun hitting it could have completed the job. Who knows.

I know.

I have had the car parked in a storage garage since the delivery day.

Now I get into it today and see a crack across the windshield.

Yes, something may have started under the molding when built and now I agrevated it when I took it on the road after delivery.

Well, if it happens again, it's definitely on the books.

Is it a tuff issue with that box that is attached to the windshield on the right side of the rear view mirror?

And the rear view itself with the onstar, etc?

I had a 1990 ZR-1 that got a rock chip which spread to a full blown crack in minutes right when I was on my way to sell it (naturally). A glass company quoted me something north of $5,000 to replace (it's the special ZR-1 windshield, different from the regular C4). My deductable was $200. I told the insurance company if they wanted to waive the deductable they could just replace it with a standard C4 glass. Oddly, they declined.
