Default HELP:Service fuel system warning...

'07Z

My fuel gauge needle dropped to empty yesterday while driving. I got a "service fuel system" and "low fuel" reading from my DIC. No jokes I had a little less than 1/2 a tank. I filled up ( Shell, correct octane ) added injector cleaner and checked my gas cap for tightness and it still happened again. I couldn't find anything in the owners manual regarding this. Anyone have an idea of what this could be? I'm wondering if this could be the same issue that my '04 experienced, a faulty fuel sending unit?? Maybe I need to go back to Chevron gas or add some Techron....

Thanks!

I have the same problem in my 08 Ls3. I think it's the FSU.

I have an 05 and it happened once to me. The problem was that after fill up, I didn't put the gas cap on securely. After securing the gas cap properly, I haven't had the issue again.

Thanks guys.

I'm thinking it's the sending unit and hopefully a can of Techron will take care of it. It did with my '04Z. Any other input is appreciated

Hi Stan,

I have had the same issue with my 06 Z51 manual trans coupe. (80 000 miles, yes that is 80 000!!!) The car is at the dealer right now with the entire power train on the floor and the rest of the car up on the lift

The issue with my car is the fsu in the right tank. There has been a lot of discussion about this issue in various posts prior. I had a long conversation with the service manager regarding this issue. It appears that the fsu is corroded and that causes the error on the fuel level output. Due to this being a corrosion issue, fuel additive / cleaner will not resolve the problem as it cannot replace the material that is lost due to the corrosion.

I suggest that you get your car to the dealer while you still have warranty coverage to fix the issue. Due to my mileage, I blew thru the factory warranty a long time ago, extended warranty also ended back at 72 000 miles. I am having this fixed at my expense!!

There has also been a lot of debate over the requirement to remove the drive train / fuel tanks to resolve this issue. The service manager told me the base 6 speed does not require removal but the Z51 version must be removed due to the extra oil cooler assembly.

While the car is apart for this issue I am also replacing the fuel pump as I know of two other cars that have suffered from fuel pump failure which does require drive train / fuel tank removal to repair. (apparently) I would rather spend the extra cash now and not have a failure on the 09 Caravan to Bowling Green.

I should have the car back tomorrow..........

Mike

I would get the service fuel system warning after every fill up. It goes away after about 10-15 minutes of driving. So lately I started to not fill it all the way up, leaving it about 1-2 gallons short of full. Since I've been doing this, I don't get the warning any more.

I had the fuel gauge failure two days ago. The shop cleared the code and gave me a bottle of fuel additive. They told me it is a known issue. It's from the high sulfur content in the gas.
