Default Service Active Handling - Magnitude

There's been a lot of discussion about the "Service Active Handling" message lately. I suspect some of that is based on my response in the Z06 forum.

My question is: How many people have had this problem. How serious was the problem or was it another symptom of a more general electrical problem.

Without being able to quantify the problem it's hard to determine an appropriate course of action.

In my case, I have a 06 convertible and a 08 Z06. Both cars had the "Service Active Handling" message but the resolution was much different for each car.

My convertible had multiple trips to the dealer over 18 months before it was finally resolved. During that time, the car had the steering column fix, a new steering column sensor, replacement of wiring and two lane departure events. On this car, I finally took it to the dealer with the intent of getting it fixed or to have GM buy it back. Ultimately, it was fixed by replacing the Electronic Brake Control Module. Once that module was replaced, the problem disappeared.

On the Z06, I got it within 3 days of buying the car. In this case, the mechanic knew what the problem was an fixed it immediately. The problem hasn't happened again in over 26K miles.

So, it's the same problem with much different resolutions. Welcome to my first poll.

I got the message on the second day of new ownership. I stopped the car and restarted and it cleared up for a few hours. It happenned again that afternoon and I did the "reboot" again. This time it went away for good. It's been 16 months since with no return of the message. It never caused any disruptive behavior. Just the messages.

I had the "Service Active Handling" message at 7,000 miles, but never any symptoms... just the message.

I fixed it myself using the "reseat connector and reroute the harness" fix as described in this forum.

Now at over 50,000 miles, and the error message has NEVER recurred.

I wouldn't do that fix.

If you do it, and something screws up after your attempt at fixing it yourself, and you have a fatal accident, then your widow won't have any recourse against GM if this is indeed a product flaw of some sort causing a safety issue.

First thing they are going to say to her is that you ^%$#ed up in trying to fix it yourself.

I had mine fixed at the dealership as per the later TSB describing the clip. It has not shown up again in nearly a year.

I have had it twice(just the message)... both times at the dragstrip after I made a pass and was on the shut down(braking) area. Restarted the car and it went away both times.

Very good advice considering the seriousness of this issue.

As Quick stated, the consequences could be lethal.
