Default Manual Trans Lube?

Has anyone else noticed this directly following start up for the first couple of miles etc.

When shifting the manual transmission you can feel the gear rolling in your palm as you shift into the gear?

2nd does it some, third is a little more noticeable, five and six gear slightly.

After several minutes of shifting this goes away.

I'm wondering if I dumped the stock transmission lube and changed over to Mobil 1 Synthetic Trans Gear lube ( if available ) if that would clear it up as well make warm shifts even smoother?

The manual transmissions in C6 Corvettes have ATF in em. Change out the GM stuff to Amsoil, Royal Purple, or Redline ATF to name a few and your troubles will go away.

Thanks!

I just googled a bit and read that the C6 tranny uses auto ATF fluid.

Several years ago I had purchased a brand new Land Cruiser with an Auto in it.

I swapped the fluid over to Mobil 1 ATF Synthetic when it was only a few weeks old.

It was my daily driver that I had to leave outside 24\7.

During a few Cold New England nights at about 25 below 0 the shift was quite restrictive coming out of park in the am.

Once I put the Mobil 1 in, no kidding, it was like cutting through butter with a hot knife no matter how cold those morning were.

Great, considering the car needs to be level and drained and filled from below I would rather work with this type of fluid than 90W any day of the week.

John,
The actual spec for the Tremec in GM applications is Dexron III or III-H. Most using AMSOIL use the AMSOIL ATF (product code ATFQT).

As an FYI for you, you'll need about 3.25 quarts to change the fluid.

Can the new spec Dextron 6 be used in the TR-6060?

Yes, the Amsoil looks like the one. I checked the specs of a few of the other Synthetics and Amsoil meets or exceeds them.
And, I should be able to get it local.

Not hijacking the post, but how often should it be changed? I'm guessing that the real need is not very often, while many may change it as if it were an auto.

I'm guessing the change intervil is way out there.

My 09 has less than 1k miles on it, I am only changing for Synthetic qualitys, as well as hoping what I posted at the start of the thread concerning the gear feel when cold will go away.

If all around shifting ends up feeling slicker all the way around, all the better

No. The GM replacement for Dexron III is Manual Transmission fluid part number 88861800 U.S. (88861801 Canada) is currently available through GMSPO. See below.

Document ID# 1897292
Subject: Manual Transmission Fluid Usage In 2007 And Prior Manual Transmissions And Transfer Cases - keywords case fluid manual transmission transfer #PIP3836B - (02/05/2007)

Models:2007 and Prior Passenger Cars and Trucks
2007 and Prior HUMMER H2
2007 HUMMER H3
2007 and Prior Saturn Passenger Cars and Trucks

This PI is superseded to add a note under concerns. Please discard PIP3836A.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:

Use of manual transmission fluid part number 88861800 U.S. (88861801 Canada) in place of Dexron III.

Important Note: If the vehicle owners manual lists Dexron VI as the recommended transmission, transaxle or transfer case fluid disregard any information supplied in this PI. Use eSI and or the vehicle owners manual to determine what type of fluid should be used prior to referencing the below information

Recommendation/Instructions:

Manual Transmission fluid part number 88861800 U.S. (88861801 Canada) is currently available through GMSPO. Current and past model vehicles listed above with either a manual transmission or transfer case that REQUIRE Dexron III should use the above listed manual transmission fluid. This fluid is a direct replacement for Dexron III in manual transmissions and transfer cases. DO NOT use Dexron VI in place of the manual transmission fluid in any manual transmissions or transfer cases as a failure may result.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. I changed mine out to RP Synchromax. My cold shifting did improve, but when it's cold (below, say, 50, it's still hard to get into second until the car warms up a bit. After that it shifts like a hot knife through butter.

Check out the e-mail I just received from RP.

The RP MaxATF is a fully synthetic Dexron IIIH product however, we actually recommend our RP Synchromax as the preferred oil for the manual transmissions where the OEM recommends an atf type fluid.

The RP Synchromax has the performance benefits of the MaxATF plus it has our advanced additive technology Synerlec which increases the metal to metal wear protection for the bearings and gears yet still allows proper engagement of the blocker rings and synchronizers.

Thanks for the email and considering RP for the 09.

see my thread over on an oil site:
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums...38#Post1250738

I have read numerous times that standard ATF does not provide enough gear protection.

This refers to 2007 and earlier. This means it was concerning the T-56 trans.

The 2008 and up cars use the TR-6060 trans.

So...can Dextron 6 be used in the TR-6060?

Guess I don't know then. AMSOIL's online lookup specs Dexron III fluids, so I'd suspect no. Anyone with an 08 or later know what the owners manual specifies?

My 2008 C6 Owner Manual lists Manual Transmission Fluid P/N 88861800 (US) and 88861801 (Canada) for all manual transmissions. These are the same part numbers cited in the TSB in post 9 above.

I just looked in my 09 manual and have the same part # above for the Manual Tranny fluid.

This isn't right, the manual should state the GM product "and" its readily available equivalent, what it is, etc.

I went this route years ago with Harley Davidson when they had claimed that you should only use their name brand of oil in thier bikes at $4.00 a qt for Mineral oil.

I Later found out it was Sun (Sunoco) oil.

If GM should ever claim that you have to run their GM brand and part # only,,,, Or will not reveal it's equivalent,,, by Federal Law they have to supply it to you for "FREE" for as long as you own the vehicle.

Harley has since Changed their tune about running their brand of oil only.
