Default question: Cats and Horses

I am having LG street series headers / x pipe / BB Bullets and a beefy CAM installed later this week onto my 08 Z51

my question is regarding CATS - I have some race cats, but being in Oklahoma I dont have to install them. How much horsepower / torque is lost by adding cats to the system?

I was told by Jim at swtuning that it will be LOUD without the cats.

any opinons would be welcome

I was told that I would only lose about 3 rwhp by adding a hi-flow cat.

The loss in HP is minimal..the smell w/o cats is the bigger pain for me, I am going with cats as I did strait pipes on my last vette and won't do it again.

I have the bullets and LG pros W/CATS on mine and let me tell you brother unless you've had headers and a loud exhaust before, you are going to be surprised! Loud like BAM!!! Cops come get me, theres a nascar loose on the street!

Im extreme and I love it but I find myself driving slower not to scare the hell out of everyone and get tickets.

So maybe you should try without cats first and THEN if you need more ... Go for it!!

Just my .02

You will loose 3-5hp with quality high flow cats. Get the TB ported at the same time and make that up and then some..

I have a cam, headers with offroad x-pipe (no cats) and B&B Bullets on my Z06. The car is definently loud but not crazy loud. The smell of running no cats on a cammed car is not as bad as I thought it would be, it does have a stronger gas odor but I only notice it if I'm standing directly behind the car.

Your car is going to sound mean, especially if you have no cats. Here's a video of mine, yours should sound even louder.

I ported the throtle body and intake and it was a VERY good mod. I have even thought about taking that mod to the next level and getting the fast lsx.

All good suggestions

thanks!!! you give something to judge by now...I would love a few more videos of a drive by!

thanks everyone for the opinons and help...I need to think about it

1 option is to leave the NPP on my car...but that seems like a waste of a good cam / headers / tune to me...

The NPP mufflers will probably surprise you after headers/cam. I have high flow cats with my headers/cam/Npp and the car is very loud. I get plenty of positive comments from people who like the sound of a beefed up exhaust system. However, sometimes it is nice to just have a quiet ride, and all I have to do is push a button to close the muffler flaps.

what do you think the difference in power would be between the bullets (which I already purchased) and the NPP with the flaps open?

I don't think there would be any difference. GM says 6 ponies for the NPP mufflers. If you don't want the NPP mufflers, you will easily sell them on this forum or eBay.
