Default Intermittent start problem after cam installation.

Sometimes my 2005 C6 will not start on the first attempt, it will only turn over rapidly. I will shut it off, and then push the start button again, and it will start normally. It all started after a cam installation 6 weeks ago. I also had a double roller timing chain installed, 10% U.D. pulley, ported throttle body, and comp cams 921 springs. The problem cropped up immediately after the installation, and the tuner replaced the timing gear. This solved the problem for a while, but after a few days passed, it cropped up again. As time passes, this is happening more frequently. The tuner will address this problem again next week. While I believe they will get this solved, I was wondering if anyone has had this problem, and what had to be done to fix it.

I just happened to have my video camera running when I went to start the car.

it needs a little more gas, hit the gas peddle a few times and it will start, not odd with big cams.. little more tuning will def help

I had similar symptoms when I replaced the cam sprocket on my '06 to one that was adjustable, actulally, the main reason was to get a stronger timing chain. The vendor did not know that there were two types for an '06, the difference being the number of reluctors. The reluctors are the raised portions on the face of the sprocket about midpoint on the radius and all the way around the sprocket . The first one they sent me was for a C5, which had no reluctors; it was very hard to start but ran fine. The second one actually was for a C6 but had only one large reluctor; it started as you described and also ran fine. The third one had, I believe, four reluctors and after I put it in all was right with the world except for a ridiculous amount of work just to change timing chains. Because you went to a double roller timing chain you also changed cam sprockets--count the reluctors on the old sprocket and try to remember how many were on the one you installed. Hope this helps.

My timing sprocket was replaced with a sprocket from a 2006 C6 engine. I believe the 2005 had a single reluctor, and 2006 and later had four reluctors. Perhaps some early 2006 models still had the single reluctor.

Those look exactly like the Cloyes adjusta sprockets that I had. The one on top is the single reluctor used in early 2006 LS 2 engines (probably 2005s too) and the one on the bottom is the four reluctor used on later 2006 LS 2 engines. Obviously they are not interchangeable, engine will run fine with either, but if you have the wrong one it may take several attempts to start, just depends on where the cam stops when the engine is turned off.

If you had the wrong reluctor you would have extremly hard starts (sounds like something is going to break). You probably just need more fuel and a better final air flow for start ups. Mine had the same issue and it was tuned out very easily.

I appreciate all of the responses to my problem. Very interesting to find out the timing sprocket for 2005 and early 2006 is different from later production cars.

While searching the Internet for more information, I found that Lingenfelter Performance Engineering is listing the sprocket with 4 sensors applicable to 1997-2008 Corvettes. So I'm confused!

thanks for the videos...I was wanting to ask you about the exhaust setup and its volume. I am having a cam/headers/midpipe installed on my car this week. I bought some bullets for the final exhaust note...but my tuner told me they would be too loud and I should stick with my NPP -same as what you have on your car. Tell me about the tone and volume with the NPP and a cam / headers.

thanks!

Ryan,

Rather than change the topic on this thread, I started a new one with another video. You can hear the car run through 1st & 2nd gears, and it will give you a better example of the exhaust sound.
