Default Free Cold Air

I just did a mod on my 09 C6 A6 base, pulling the plastic fasteners out of the lower cowling going to the air cleaner and creating a gap for outside air to enter the intake air filter area. I did this on my 06 and all was fine. However, after a test ride today after doing this on my 09, I noticed a roughness or hesitation on steady throttle and deacceleration. Does this make any sense, is the location of the MAF a factor and is it that sensitive?

Any input or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

It seems that the 08's and 09's MAF sensor are sensitive to turbulent air flow causing surges and issues similar to what you are experiencing. The MAF sensor prefers an even flow of continuous air, such as, some of the aftermarket cold air intakes (CAI). However, there are downsides to some CAI, water ingestion and design quality in some units. Do your research. The stock LS3 air filter is actually a good unit, just lacking cold air.

Would using the free air mod, in addition to a cone filter like airraid on a LS3 be ok? Would having a cone filter as opposed to the stock air unit smooth out and reduce the turbulence seen when using the stock intake???

I actually made two elongated holes (about 6" long) at the bottom ends of my shroud to allow cold air to flow directly into my my air filter. This mod is recommended on Jim Hall's website for Halltech's Killer Bee/Beehive intake setup, which I have. I also re-installed the stock LS3 intake with the open holes in the shroud and it runs fine. I have no problems with hesitation, surges or CEL's. It's actually a great way of getting cold air using the stock intake. Keep in mind, this mod worked for me, I do not claim it will work for everyone. The stock LS3 air filter is a good unit, I do not know if you will be gaining any hp using the cone filter setup.

I think I'll take your advice on the stock intake. You said that you cut the holes in the shroud as mentioned with the halltech. Did you use the "beehive" with the stock intake or just leave it completely open to the rest of the engine compartment?
