Default Paddle & 1st Gear

I am still confused on my 2009 C6 on the transmission. I understand all about touching the paddle then you have to do the shifing. I know the vette starts off in second gear in Drive and also on the padding shifting, but when I start off in S is the transmission in 1st Gear?
Please advise, thanks Syswayne

The tranny ALWAYS starts in 1st gear in both "D" and in "S", unless you've used the paddles while in "S." If you're in paddle mode AND ONLY IN PADDLE MODE, the tranny will start out in 2nd gear unless you've manually downshifted to 1st gear.

If you think the tranny starts in 2nd gear when in "D", try it and watch the tach as you slowly accelerate from a dead stop to 60 mph. See how many times the rpms drop off. Tell me how many times you saw it shift. There should be 5 shifts.

If you start in "S" and never touch the paddles, it will always downshift to 1st as you stop, then start out in 1st. Same with "D".

Not trying to split hairs, but if you listen carefully to see how many times the RPM drops you should hear 6 in total - 5 for the gear shifts and one for the torque converter locking up.

I notice that sound often, particularly when downshifting and then accelerating "briskly". It's a 2 part sound that almost sounds like a shift.
