Default Help with motor work, procedure.

Hi ALL,

I have two questions about the work I am doing on my car. I have done a fair amount of small block chev work but not much engine work with the ls2. I have a service manual but also know that things dont always have to be done their way.

1st question- to pull the drivers head off, can the alt/power steering bracket be removed or disconnected with out taking the abs unit out and/or pulling the power steering pulley? (according to the service manual)

2nd question- can the oil pan be removed from the car with out removing the engine or according to the service manual removing the entire cross member. (requires a lot of work and lift I dont have) Looks like you may be able to raise engine off motor mounts and inch or two and get it out?

thanks in advance,
Donald

P.S. The reason for the question on the oil pan is, #4 cyl in down about 60 psi on compression and the leak down test is showing about 20% compaired to 5-8% on all other cylinders. It does not seem to be comming back through the intake or out the exhaust valves. Will be checking valves and gasget when head is off. Am looking at having to re-ring piston. Car is driven easy, never tracked however modified per sig.
Thanks for any help,
Donald

To remove the left head you will not need to remove the ABS unit and probably will not even need to loosen it (only two bolts if you do). You will not need to remove the power steering pulley. Do remove the alternator and you will have to remove the bolt holding the alternator bracket to the left head, may need to loosen the other alternator bracket bolts to the block also--some of them are a pain to get to.
You will not be able to lift the engine up enough to remove the oil pan, the back of the intake manifold will contact the firewall. You can remove the oil pan by lowering the front subframe after supporting the engine. You will then need to get the front end aligned. Hope this helps.

Thanks Austin,

I got some info from Spin also and along with yours got some good info. I take it that only the top two bolts on the alt bracket screw into the head and by just backing off on the other bracket bolts will allow the head to come off.

put a couple squirts engine oil in cylinder, leave plug out and retake comp test, if comes up, rings bad, if not ,valve bad.No sense removing everything not to know WHAT is wrong.Possible bad lifter or cam lobe flat. Check w/ dial indicator.
