Weird A6 trans issue HELP!

Weird A6 trans issue HELP!
I have a 06 with a6 transmission with 35K miles on it. Today I drove to work approx 10 miles no problem. At lunch I drove the car about 1.5 miles to the freeway on ramp. Stopped at the light, when the light turned green the car felt like the transmission was stuck in drive. No first gear so I put the car in S mode same thing, when I used the paddles I got no gear indications on the DIC, and noticed the check engine light on. So I exited on the next street, pulled over and shut the car off. When I restarted the car the check engine light was still on but I had first gear and using the paddles the gears came up on the DIC. I went to lunch approx 8 miles no issues, drove back to work fine. Started the car to come home tonight no problem, but the check engine light is still on. 
Has anyone had this happen? What do you think the problem is and what do you think I should do? Thanks in advance for your help!
