Emission Inspection - my '05 computer not detected
For the second year in a row, the dealers emission inspection gear can’t detect my computer. The inspectors aren’t getting a “not ready” message. Their equipment can’t even tell it’s connected to anything. The dealer tried connecting under the dash and under the hood. Same results.
I just chose to drive it w/o the sticker last year. This year, I took it to 2 different shops hoping last year was a fluke. It wasn’t. Neither of these guys could establish a connection to my computer either. I put a new battery in it about 6 months ago. Went through a FOB/security reflash and no problems.
I need some experienced advice before I let a dealer pump me for 40hrs of electrical tech time investigating. Has anyone seen a similar issue?
Read your warranty. The emissions warranty is for 80,000 miles or 10 years or something like that. The computer system is part of that warranty. Without it you cannot pass a smog test. Take it to the dealer and demand the federal emissions warranty. It doesn't matter if your state has a emissions check or not. It's a federal law.
Since I don't have ready access to a tuner, I went ahead and called my dealer for an appointment. (BTW, Jumper was a Bill Heard dealer, so they're toes up. I called Ellis). Ellis put their vette specialist on the phone with me. He thought the emissions stations equipment blew my curtsey light fuse. He hung on the line while I checked it, the ECM, CIGLTR, and a few other fuses. They were all good. So, I made an appointment for him to look at it. VET4LES was right. The 'puter is warranted 8/80k. I'll let you guys know what happens.
I took it in to Ellis Friday morning. Their vette guy solved the problem in 3 minutes. It turns out that you have to push the Power button to the on position for the OBD to read. Go figure. 2 dealers, and 3 service stations overlooked that little detail. I got the emission report. No charge, of course.

Nice! Glad everything worked out. And that emissions warranty info is nice. I would have never thought about it.
